With the new balance changes, some ships that relied on puncture effects before will need to be reworked. I've thought of two possibilities so far.
    • Increase missile/torpedo payload and switch guns to ion
      • A chance to add multiple types of missiles to a ship
      • The ship will be stronger against shields than before
      • Once PD gets fixed, these ships will have trouble scoring kills
    • Add multiple outputs to guns in attempt to bring their block destruction back up to par
      • Various output configuration and effect possibilities
      • The power efficiency will be pretty dismal compared to before
The challenges presented by the new balance mechanics are intended and overall good. We just have to adapt.

However, do note that in order to actually do the 6-7 blocks of punch damage, you require a rather large group now. As such, you don't have to rework all your weapons necessarily - it simply is no longer feasible to do as much cannon based block damage as before, which is a good thing.

All in all, a ship that attempts to get pre-update block damage back will not make it far, given double shielding and better block armor in addition to the large cost of bringing the damage back up to former glory in the first place.

Instead, embrace the changes and enjoy the higher shielding and armor, which means battles can last much longer - you will probably fare better if you (as your first option describes partially) have a more ion focused weapons layout and then top it of with block damage support in order to not have to rely on missiles 100%.

Afaik pierce uses the old punch-through effect. So you could use ion weapons and maybe cannons with 90% pierce effect (to keep the shields down while shooting) to kill the shields and do a good amount of block damage.

Ion and pierce are mutually exclusive. Do you mean separate weapons?
