Promethesus wrote a thread where he had the idea of combining the GalacticCraft mod (minecraft) with Starmade. I really like the idea, but newcomers in Starmade could get confused when they don't know what to do. So instead of replacing the Sandbox Mode with this, lets create a new gamemode called: Survival Mode or Expert Mode. Now the different between Sandbox Mode and Survival Mode is:
    1. The Spawn:
You spawn on a planet with nothing in your inventory and with no shop in range. The planet that the player spawns on needs an atmosphere, tons of resources and it must be huge (just make the lavacore in the middle smaller). to begin your adventure, you have to find a house that is standing somewhere on the planet. In the house stands a refinery (multiblock structure 2x3x2), a simple coal generator (multiblock structure 1x2x1) and a factory unit (is used for crafting EVERYTHING, multiblock structure 2x3x2)
    2. The Resources:
to make crafting simple i have the idea of replacing the current ores with stuff we all know. Iron, Copper, Tin, Coal, Gold, Aluminium, Titanium, Silver, Silicon, Magnesium, Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz, Amethyst, Emerald and other resources like: Rubber, Bronze, Brass, Steel, Charcoal, Oil and different dyes.
    3. Crafting:
you can no longer craft stuff in your inventory! And crafting works a little bit different... you want to make a Ship core? What did you say? You can't find the recipe in the Factory? Oh, yes because you need blueprints to craft stuff! now you're maybe asking yourself: "where the f*ck can i find these things?" well, you can find blueprints everywhere in storages or some NPCs will give you blueprints (quests or trading).
Imagine that you found a blueprint for a Ship core and you have no idea how to use it... simply open the factory and you will see multiply things:
A large inventory where you can put all resources that you need for crafting, a empty field that shows the block you are currently crafting (click on it to change the recipe), two bars (one shows how many energy the machine has and the other shows the Progress of crafting (for example: the second bar is half full, that means the crafting is to 50% done)), and a slot where you can put blueprints to unlock new crafting recipes.
    4. blocks and mechanics:
After exploring the entire planet you found every Tier 1 blueprint that you need to build your first spacecraft! okay, after a long mining- / crafting tour you have everything you need for a simple ship:
    a ship core
    a energy source (fuel generator)
    fuel tank (optional)
    hull blocks
mining drills (multiblock structure (facing up) 1x2x1)
    weapons (Laser)
    oxygen tank
    oxygen collector
to understand this list we have to go to the next point
    5. Tier system:
now this idea of Tiers comes from Robocraft. tiers say how good a block/item is, for example: a tier 1 laser is weaker than a tier 2 laser. i will make a list of a few blocks/items with different tiers.
    Tier 1:
every tier 1 blueprint can be found on or near the spawn planet.
blocks: laser cannon, mining drill, fuel tank, oxygen tank, ship core, oxygen collector, hull, fuel generator, factory block, coal generator, refinery block, storage, glass, simple light (needs energy), beacon
items: steel ingot, bronze ingot, rubber ingot, plastic ingot, charcoal, liquid canister (water, oil, fuel), flashlight, player jet-pack, spacesuit
    Tier 2:
every tier 2 blueprint can only be found in space (the tier level goes higher as you go further away from the spawn). every tier 1 block/item can be found as tier 2 blueprint (but tier 2 block/item is harder, better, faster and stronger).
new blocks: laser cannon computer (weapon computers are optional, there only use is to upgrade your systems), universal liquid tank, medical supplies, doors (plex)
new items: weapon-upgrade: reload (weapons with this upgrade needs less time to reload), weapon-upgrade: range (weapons with this upgrade have an increased range), beacon-upgrade: range (increased the beacon range)
    Tier 3:
new blocks: navigation computer, navigation antenna, salvage cannon, salvage computer, building block, battery block (can be seen on the HUD, to see how much energy is storaged), scanner (is used to scan blocks, stars or planets (to see which tier it is, if it has a breathable atmosphere and other informations)), gravitation generator
new items: factory-upgrade: speed (increased crafting speed), factory-upgrade: energy (decreased enery use, increased energy storage)
    6. other:
you can't open a sandbox mode world in survival mode, and vise versa.
not every planet has an atmosphere. which means you could die on atmosphere-less planets/moons.
many planets have one or more moons rotating around them, these moons could be full of enemies or could have a station on it.
enemy ships cannot fly through the atmosphere of a planet, but they can fly on moons!
you can upgrade everything that can have a computer. (weapons, shields, factorys, refineries, beacons, navigation stuff, player-jetpack, lights)

im sorry if you found some mistakes, the text is long and my english is relative bad.
    leave a comment!
and i don't know how many ideas of this tread was suggested in the past.
the mean idea is comming from this thread.

    This is creative, definitely.

Players of Starmade are liking looking in a completely different direction, however. With the way things are going, I'd assume if they ever added a survival aspect it would be very similar to X3 or Evochron:Mercenary. In your description and idea it turns things into less of a "Survival/sandbox" and more into a linear progression. For example, you stated that higher tier gear would be farther from the spawn- this creates a linear progression most would probably object to.

This definitely strays far from Starmade's direction, and I'd assume this could only be made into a mod.(As it goes so far from the original idea)

Spawning on a planet will certainly create problems in multiplayer. I like the idea of atmospheres meaning something and the existence of moons, but I really don't see any other part of this happening. Resource changes, even only names, and tiered equipment is definitely not going to happen. Seems to me that you are still in the minecraft/modcraft mindset, and this game is completely different.
