How can I effectively add to game memory?

My game crashed from lack of memory when I tried loading a large ship, so I attempted to increase game memory (from the launcher). However, when I change any of the numbers the game won't start when I click ok, it just shuts down.

How can I get this thing to work?

What is your OS?
How much ram does your system have?
Is your OS 32 or 64 bit?

Mine is set to 128-1024-2048 and I have 8gb ram. Tho most times setting initial higher than 64 causes issues mine seems stable 90% of the time. If you need more physical ram in your system I'd recommend getting about 4gb. It's pretty cheap. If you have that much or more already then just tweak the memory settings. As long as it doesn't add up to more memory then you have available or more then 3gb if you are on a 32bit OS you should be just fine. Remember to use 64bit java with 64bit windows.

Instructions on java and memory tweaks are everywhere on the forum. Just do a search.

My OS is windows 7 64 bit with 8144MB RAM available.

Edit: I just installed java 64 bit and it works at last now. :3
