So I found a space station and harvested a portion of it and got scrap. What do I do with this scrap? Can I convert it somehow into something else? I dropped it into my capsule refinery thinking it would produce alloy but it did nothing.

Put it in a Micro Assembler and it will get turned into Alloyed Metal Mesh and Crystal Circuit.

Generally though, harvesting scrap is a bit of a waste of time. You are better off mining asteroids so as to get both more and more variety.

My current strategy is to mine the ships/stations that I find for scrap, convert the scrap into AM's and CC's and then use that to mass produce whatever items can be made with just those 2 things and than sell them to the shops. I will then use the money to buy whatever I need. Yes I know more advanced items yield more money but I am keeping things simple for now. Plus a ship/station will probably yield more material for producing AM's and CC's than a asteroid relative to size.

EDIT: Not related to my above question per say, but why is there (unless something has changed) a money cap of 2 billion?

I do not know why there is a money cap.

With regard to eating stations for scrap, if you are playing singleplayer on your own system, by all means, play as you like. But do not eat up the stations on multiplayer servers, as many players appreciate having such stations around, both to look at and sometimes to occupy.

I made a micro assembler and threw some crap in there but nothing is being converted. I am using lots of factory enhancers but I don't have the power needed to run all of them. I still have 50k power for them though so at least some of them should work right?

EDIT: Never mind it was indeed a power issue.

Because 2147483647 is the highest signed number that can be stored in 4 bytes.
Why does it need to be stores in 4 bites?

I wonder if anybody has ran into problems with having only 2 billion credits or if it makes no difference.

It used to be a problem somewhat, only fairly large ships ever got close to that when everything was Buy-with-credits (it's buy-with-Blocks now). The standard in-game stations cost much less than that to buy, so unless you're hoarding credits for no real reason, it isn't an issue.

Whats more, some servers offer banking scripts, so you can store money there and call it back whenever, bypassing the credit limit entirely.

I think it would be a cool idea to actually have some kind of credit storing block so that players can have bank like buildings. It would be possible to steal from as well ;D

Some players use their own shops as some form of make-shift bank, though the credits are destroyed if the shop module is removed, and it also have a 2.14 billion cap.

I wouldn't say I'm fond of the idea of stealing credits, but plundering bases for blocks should be just as good, yes?

Biggest problem I have with the game right now when it comes to credits is that I feel there is currently a very limited reason to actually gather large amounts of cash. Since shops can only buy and sell a limited amount of goods you can't really go and just buy the stuff you need to make even a single large spaceship, so having vasts amounts of credits is probably pointless. Either stores should be allowed to stock more items or the player should be given more things to spend his money on.

Credits used to be used to buy ships (and can be toggled to do so in the configs), and are used for Station creation costs (1million credits to create a station default).

Honestly though, I don't believe we need a system based entirely on credits, why not good old fashion barter and trade? If you gathered the credits to make a battleship, chances are you sold more than enough of the materials you needed to just craft the pieces. Shops are actually potentially exploitable atm, so increasing maximum stock would not be wise till that gets fixed some.

But you don't really need credits, since the game is focused on being a survival sandbox, so crafting should play a bigger role, yes?

I personally have my micro assembler convert scrap and feed it directly into a factory producing standard grey hull. It is needed for every other hull so I found it's good just to have a load of it in my factories supply chest so I can more easily produce hull on demand as I play shopless survival. I only bought and sold items when I needed cake.
