Allow turrets to fire straight (90 degrees) "up"

    Yeah, I know... there's no "up" in space but you get what I mean. A turret should be able to fire directly above it. As of now, there's a blind spot above a turret, and it's a bother. The only solution is to mount turrets in pairs with one turned 90* to the other.

    I know work on the new turret system is underway, so now would be a good time to fix this. With modifications to the gun movement, there shouldn't be any clipping issues when pointing the barrel(s) of a turret straight up.

    This needs to be fixed because of some cosmetic issues with certain designs. Sometimes it just looks bad to have a turret at a particular angle, but with a blind spot above each turret, sometimes it's still necessary.

    Adding turrets in more than 1 area can help cover blind spots. Part of piloting is to make sure all guns are in range whenever possible.

    But yeah, the option to have turrets point straight up (or even fold over backwards for that matter) would be nice.

    Unless the turret has free space under it to actually turn, no.
    Turrets should take into accont their size and free space to turn around them, also the limitations of their link.
    Dock modules right now dont imply a physical bond (as in an actual mechanism that links both turret and ship).
    Turrets, the way i see it should have full 360 degree freedom on the x/z plane while only have a limited angle of freedom on both x/y and z/y planes (rotate coord system as required) depending on both free space to actually turn and an actual limit given by the docking module, whichever is smallest.

    Most of what you said here may not apply after the turret rework. Up/down movement is expected to be changed considerably so that only a portion of the turret moves up/down like a battleship cannon. Because of that, there should be nothing in the way of a properly-built turret pointing up. If the blind spot is left in with the new system, it would be silly. Turrets are the way they are now for clipping reasons.

    My problem is the fact that there isn't always a good place to mount an extra turret to cover the blind spot. In addition, that means using two smaller turrets for a job that would be better handled by one larger one.
