It would be good if you could have hand held grenades that you would be able to buy along with other weapons (like the guns which are currently available) in special military shops.

The idea with the hand grenade would be that you would take one out (you would have to buy them thus there would not be a infinite amount of them that you would have) by selecting it in the quick select bar thing and then you would click in the direction you want to throw it and your arm would throw it there and you would hear the pin fly out, and in a few seconds the grenade would explode damaging a certain radius around it.

But I think also that there should be different types of shops, so you can have the shops we have at the moment which would sell stuff that you need for ships and stations, and then you would have more military shops which would be inside more military defended bases (maybe not even trading guild, maybe there would be more NPC factions that could trade or at least cell weaponry) that would sell special military acquirement, like the hand grenade that I talked about and guns like the standard LASER which we have as default and the other guns such as the sniper rifle and rocket launcher. And maybe there would be more hand held weapons on offer by the time that this would be available. And maybe some of those weapons would need some kind of battery that would need charging, or some sort of ammunition which you could buy somewhere, or make somewhere.

What do we need a hand grenade for when there's a rocket launcher?

If not in gravity, would the grenade float in a straight line?
I guess so, unless they hit something, in which case depending on how fast they are going and what they hit, it would bounce off in a slightly different way.

Rocket launchers are direct fire weapons as opposed to hand grenades which are lobbed weapons.

Because grenades don't explode on contact?
I don't think schema needs to waste his time coding bouncy grenade physics when direct fire rocket launchers already fill the role of "handheld explosives."

He wouldn't have to. It could just use the everyday physics that are already there. He'd just need to set the size of the bounding box(and set a mass value), and your everyday ship-collision physics will do the job.

Eh, it still seems kind of useless. The main appeal of grenades is that they're gravity affected, but the only natural gravity is on planets. You need to manually trigger ship and station based grav.

Or the grenades are automatically in the same gravity as the one who threw them. Besides, IMO gravity isn't the main advantage of handgrenades, it is the fact that they can ricochet without causing damage.

    OMG.

Main advantage is their low weight and their use simultaneously with a hand-gun.

While rockets absolutely destroy everything, hand-grenades can cause a smoke screen, flash-light or distracting sound source without dealing any kinetic damage to your own entity (more an RP issue).

I suggest remotely activated hand-grenades which just disable the target (gas, incapacitating infusions through thrown spikes...) for capturing crew.
