Since the OP is an encyclopedia salesman that just likes to spout 'FIX IT' instead of actually offering suggestions, allow me.

While mining, maybe we could unearth rare alien artifacts. This could range from a simple collector's item that you can mount as a decorative item, to the schematics for a new ship.

    I don't have anything else.

While the first sentence is quite rude TBH, I like the idea. It could be done similarily to Terrafirmacraft mod in Minecraft where you can randomly get gems from mining regular stone. In SM, you should also be able to sell them for a price depending on the rarity of the mined artifact/gem/whatever

The OP is ALWAYS an encyclopedia salesman.

    (lighten up, it's a joke)

It might also be interesting to randomly find a ship "buried" in an asteroid. (a random assortment of the blocks of a ship's blueprint is located within the asteroid)
Also, what about traces of other elements(rocks) on some asteroids?

Hmm, I like the idea of "buried ships" giving you a few random components.

The presence of artifacts would, I at least feel, only be possible if the asteroids where at least twice the normal size they are now. From there we would have to consider the fact that the sheer number of asteroids in a system would make having rare artifacts difficult. Unfortunately, I would have no idea what a good ratio for this would be.

Additionally, we could also make each asteroid belt sector contain more asteroids. This would make it feel more like a solid belt of asteroids that you have to learn and manage movement in. This promotes a sense of danger for the belts for any type of ship trying to harvest them, because with one wrong move the entire sectors asteroids could go flying into another sector.

We think this whole mining mechanic could be a lot more... zippy....

Its just, it needs more Zazz! Am I, I'm right to say that right?

No you're right to say that... its just, you know.... you could stand to zazz it up

No offense StarMade but I gotta say this whole thing it lacks... zazz (well put)

Can't you just, put it on the Zazz train to Zazz-ville

Yea, because no offense but there is absolutely no Zazz to be found...Not here anyway. Not in these parts

What we're trying to say is there are two kind of games out there. Those with and those without.... ZAZZ

    No one gets the reference

There's been some cool ideas with wrecked ships, personal equipment could be a big thing too, when ever that gets developed more.

Can anyone think of something that would make mining require a bit of skill, maybe that would bring mining it's missing Zazz

Mining isn't like combat. If you want mining to require more skill, knock the asteroids away and try and hit a moving target.

True, but I was thinking more of a special setup in your craft, dependent on, say available power, or some distance that yields more. I know these suggestions suck, that's why I threw it out there... :)
