Before I start, its not always sluggish, but lately there were a couple contradictory performance highs/lows.

    First off, my rig: AMD FX-8120 Black Edition (8-core 3.1Ghz, not OC'd), 8GB DDR3 RAM, Msi GeForce GTX660, 7200rpm 2TB HDD.

On one server I played, there was this enormous station, and by that I mean larger than the stations from the station contest. Barely any performance loss on med/high settings, mostly 80-200 fps.

On another, a station considerably smaller but with a lot of medium ships docked to it (around 20-30 green faction blips), I get 15-25fps that is very sluggish and stuttering.

I think that the amount of blocks in one scene and in the other doesn't differ much from what I'm guessing by size, however the performance is significantly worse in the 2nd scene.

Is it my rig, the game, or both? Or another cause. If someone can explain some things I could do (I can list my settings if necessary, I've lowered them even more since then with almost no visible improvement) it would help alot since I *think* my pc should be able to run this game quite well.

    Thanks in advance.

    M.

The more entities in a sector the greater performance suffers. This is a fact. If somehow a bunch of the ships had become undocked I could see the issue being much worse.

Make sure to increase the memory limit (can be changed in the launcher) to a reasonable amount, the default (1GB) is very low. I have 6GB, but even 3 should be more than enough.
Also make sure your Java installation is 64bit.

Thanks for the info. Java is 64-bit, that I am sure of (dates back to my Minecraft times...) plus I update it regularly. But I haven't found that memory limit in the launcher, may have just accidentally not noticed it but I've been over the options a few times. The game itself also told me that memory was reached so I am still looking for it.

Edit: my bad, was looking in game options, no in the launcher. Found it.

It's in the Launcher itself. Where the game patches and displays news. There's an Options menu. You'll find Memory Settings there. You might have to pull down the end of the little window that pops up to see all the fields.
