Thoughts about the recent trailers and equalty between shipbuilders.

Most of you all have seen the latest Starmade trailers. One important detail had caught my eye (very likely not just mine). The ships in the trailers are all built by Mushroom Fleet (MF) members. So what, you may ask – what’s wrong with that? What makes me upset is that there are so many talented shipbuilders out there who deserve to get some recognition, yet all we see are the same two-three people – and don’t get me wrong – all of them are great builders, but it is unfair that they get all the spotlight. I know how many months it takes to get that titan built, how much sweat and blood goes into making that frigate, how well thought-out that fighter needs to be, but no matter, how hard you try, how much time and effort you put into building, there are practically zero chances of getting recognized by the developers if you’re not a member of MF. If you don’t agree, name at least one shipbuilder who got at least a tiny bit of recognition from the developers who isn’t related to MF in any way.

The reason why I’m bringing this up, is because of the Steam Starmade release, there will be many new players, and the more new players join the community, the more the question of “Why THESE people in particular are promoted so much?” will arise. It can create certain distrust between players and developers which can be very, very harmful for the game and its community, especially in such early stages of development. In fact, there is a certain level of favouritism suspicions already.

TL;DR : I don’t hate the people who get promoted in official trailers and such, but there are many hard-working people who deserve attention just as much. (It even rhymes a little)

My guess is that schema outsources the actual trailer making to MF and its much easier for them to get the feel they are looking for with their own ships / style instead of multiple building styles.

Just seems to be more of a practical thing than what you are trying to push.

Because as a server they are prolific, show initiative and present content to us.

The 'official' Schine made trailer, however, is being worked on by Bench .

I'm speaking for myself here.

Whenever I need something from the community, I go to those who have shown to me that they are reliable and available. People who have initiative, who reach out to myself and others.

I'm rarely going to sift through the entire community (I'm busy, it's just the truth) to find people who have potential, but have never made that step forward. I want the best of the best, people who can do the job, do it well, and make themselves available and easy to contact.

I have no interest in whether this person is part of this group, or is a friend of that person. It doesn't matter to me.

Tomino_sama has opened up MF to provide for a lot of the youtube content creators out there. While there may be plenty of ship builders out there and plenty of youtubers out there as well, it's not surprising that you will find a lot of video content comes from players on MF considering the support and community for youtubers that has been built there.

There's no underlying bias that exists, no one is specifically making sure they only choosing MF ships for a specific video, it just matters what videos are being created and what makes it easiest to create those videos.

Take the official trailer i'm working on. Does it contain ships made by people from MF? Yes. Does it contain ships made by people not from MF? Also yes.

I have over 300 ships submitted to me for my videos and for this particular trailer. They won't all make it into the trailer otherwise it would go for an hour.
Honestly the way I do stuff is all random, I literally scroll through my catalog loaded with every ship and spawn one in at random, if it fits that particular shot then great, if not then i'll load a new one in and see. I have no idea who built them and only afterwards when consulting my spreadsheet will I have any idea who gave it to me. Will some people cry MF about the trailer? Probably, but I haven't gone out of my way to pick any one ship over another, it's all been random looking at what suits the scene.

That's how I approach it, not everyone will do it like that but that's their own initiative.

We have a dedicated team of video creators for StarMade content such as trailers and the news and anything else posted on the StarMade YouTube channel. These are community members who have already shown themselves as great video creators, so most likely they've found their way onto MF at one point or another. It's not a prerequisite, it's just how it happens.

I've no doubt you pick out ships honestly, and I have no problems with the fairness of the contests. I'm just saying that it's just as simple to put ships made by other players (not only from MF) into the other trailers.

It is unreasonable for a player made trailer to be forced to show anything other than their personally selected player made content.

Normally I'd agree with you OP but equality =! equal results, equality = equal opportunity.

That said, I'm not a very big fan of MF myself. IMO this would be like activision contracting out trailers from Faze Clan. My experience has shown them to pretend to be friendly and open to outiders while certain higher-ups among them are elitist af. Furthermore, their server is so overmoderated it causes me literal physical pain to even think about.

Basically: yeah they suck but you're going after them for the wrong reason.

I think the problem here is when a video is/becomes official.
To me a video/trailer regarding SM is official, if one of the following is true:

1. The video was made and published by a schine member, without an explicit statement it isn't official
2. The video was posted in a newspost, without an explicit statement it isn't official
