Blocks should be rotatable

I have noticed that you can't rotate a block of dirt, or any blocks with a pattern for that matter. Right now I'm trying to make a ship with a garden, but the surface of the ship is on a right angle. I can't use grass blocks since they can only be placed in the up position, so it won't look right.

The orientation bits are also used for ores. The series of bug fixes affected all nondirectional blocks.

I second OP's suggestion. I've wanted to build ring-world type structures with artificial environments for a while now, but I can't achieve that when I can't rotate them.
