What exactly are scanners and how are you meant to use them? Will they at some point replace radar or something?

Place them and connect them like a regular weapon system. They recharge automatically and when you use it you will get information in your nav menu about activity in the vicinity. It will not replace radar.

I think this only detects other players in the area. It seems to serve no purpose in single player at this time.

The use of scanners has puzzled me slightly too.

In build mode they seem to be activated as soon as you link up a module to the scanning computer, what can result in running out of power immediately while building. I presume this is a glitch.

In flight mode you can add the scanner to the command bar and with a right click charge it. Why one would want to do this more then once puzzles me because a blue rectangle indicates that it is active / charged already and it stays that way even when leaving the ship and coming back to it later.

As for what it does, I only noticed a blue message box from time to time telling me pirates where on a scavenger run nearby my location, but, for instance, it doesn't tell me that there's a shop within 4 or, if in a owned system, 6 blocks away.

As always, if not mentioned otherwise, this all is in single-player mode. ;)

Nope. Unlike jump drives, scanners charge automatically.

Okay, I can see that is logical and intended behavior, but I still think the automatic charging should only start in flight-mode, not in build-mode as it is the case now. I can imagine one wants to put the scan modules, the antenna, somewhere inaccessible, while not all power blocks are in place yet to create enough juice at that point in construction. ;)

i'know it is a late post, but you can turn the scanner off so it doesn't auto charge. i believe u turn it of my pointing at it and hitting "r".
Might be wrong, but i read it somewhere.

Yeah, scanners only detect other players so they're completely worthless in single player. I believe they have a range of 6 sectors in a system controlled by your faction, 4 sectors in a neutral system, and 2 sectors in systems controlled by other factions, or at least enemy factions.
