I ask this because right now boarding actions are incredibly difficult, if not impossible. And lets face it most if not all of us would love to try it.

A few things that come to mine are things like mag boots, C4, some sort of magnetic clam that would allow a boarding craft to latch on to a ships hull, and a cutting beam that would bypass shields but would require you to be right next to what you were cutting

the ability to kill the crew and hack the faction protection would also be required, otherwise it's just pointless, you get to the bridge, and then have to pew the core to kill the pilot, but their protected by the shields.

In order to board a ship, it first would need an interior that can be boarded by some sort of weakpoint. For some builds this already froms a problem. And just drilling your way to the core room, to aviod any real combat, would be just a buzzkill and stupid to say the least.

Then you got all the other issues once you get into the ship. What if the ships has inner turrets? What if you got multiple doors that keep you from moving freely or fast enough so the crew to take counteractions? What about anti-personel traps? ...

And before all that 'Why would the pilot or the turret defence even allow you to enter the ship (before ripping the dropship apart)?'.

First step would be to make the game understand what is interior and what is exterior. Right now it applies shielding to everything and not just the exterior hull.

At this point you have the groundwork to implement atmosphere to ships allowing oxygen and venting of said atmosphere.

Once that it done you implement a way to hack the faction locked doors. Issue here is griefing and stuff. A solution would be that the ship needs to be piloted by a Bobby AI or a player.

At this point NPCs will need an overhaul so that they can assist players in defending and assaulting ships.

As you can see these are big changes/work and would no doubt also be implemented along with other big changes such as fleshed out ground vehicle systems and the planned Faction Overhaul.

    I would like:

    1) ships have 10x more shields, but recharge 20x slower, making battles interesting and the ability to board ships once shields are down. Also add in shield boosters to boost recharge rate of shields ---> This way a small ship can take out an unarmed large ship
    2) 10x more power, 20x less recharge, same reason as shields, plus you can't fire all weapons indefinitely (or at least make it near impossible to have a cap stable ship with everything firing and shields recharging at the same time)
    3) chairs and cockpits to replace the core, so you can just pew the pilot and sit on the bloody chair
    4) buildable weapons and armor because why not throw that in there
    5) hackable doors (just a simple button, would take around 5~10 seconds depending on skill

    1) said 'booster' is a shield recharger?
    2) in most cases I ran across, the ships have enough power capacity to support their fire and recharge for minutes, even if they have no power generators.(provided they're not small ships)
    3) I can agree to that
    4) I definetly agree here
    5) maybe make it a minigame of sorts?

    5) Need to be able to make it harder to hack by linking a "Firewall" Block to it. Catch is expensive and cap of 3-5 maybe making max hack time almost a minute. In that minute the hacker can not move and needs to restart if he gets shot.

The hacker shall be allowed to abort midhack though.

    Jath's definitive boarding party sequence.

A small stealth ship mag clamps to the side of an unsuspecting ship. The on board computers go to work deciphering the docking bay door's code. In several minutes, the door is hacked and opened. The stealth ship slides into the docking bay and re-magnetizes to the hull in a turret's blind spot. The pilot of the stealth ship, Jatham, and three crew members exit the craft and gets to work. They walk up to an airlock that is logic controlled. This is an easy hack. He uses his PDA to enter the system and a small minigame ensues. It's finished quickly and he's through. Down a cooridor, they come upon another door, this time, it's a blast door and there's no logic blocks on this side. His PDA is plugged in and he begins the minigame, only it's a little harder this time. He trips an alarm.

** BEEP BEEP BEEP, WARNING, INTRUDER ALERT, ACTIVATE AUTOMATIC DEFENSES**

Oh crap, now they know they're here. The closer to the core the harder the hack. He manages to open the blast door on his second try.

He peeks around a corner and sees a small anti-personel turret pop out of the ceiling. He takes his rocket launcher out and pops around the corner loosing a missile. The turret whirs around and blasts in his direction clipping him in the shoulder as he ducks back behind the corner. BOOM, the turret beeps in protest as is tries to continue but is disabled.

They start down the hallway again and looks around the next corner. He sees a guard looking in his direction so he pulls out his sniper and takes aim. BOOM. The guard slumps to the ground. They continues up a ramp. Beep!

Crap, another turret! He ducks behind a pillar just in time to see a shotgun blast whip past him on all sides. One of his crewmen was hit and is lying on the floor. He jumps out and shoots a rocket before it has the chance to take another shot, but a turret out of his view zaps the rocket with a laser incinerating it. He turns and jumps through an open door just narrowly missing getting shot at again. His crewman isn't so lucky and the second blast finishes him off. There's another door and several systems computers nearby. He hacks the computers first. They are disabled and can no longer fire. He calls his fleet, Weapons disabled!.

Jatham glances out the window and sees several ships a fraction of this ship's size drop out of hyperspace. They immediately start pelting the ship he's on. I'd better hurry, he thinks. He gets to the core room. He hacks the door, but the pilot is waiting on the other side with a guard and a rocket launcher. CRAP, Jatham jumps back and to the side as the rocket blasts into the wall he's standing next to killing his other two crewmen. Ringing in his ears as he scrambles to his feet. He's injured pretty badly, but can't afford to loose this fight. He hobbles around the corner behind the previous door and readies his energy blade.

The guard comes through first. SHLING, the guard drops to the floor stunned. Jatham takes out his sniper and fires at the pilot, hitting him, but it's not fatal. The pilot runs back into the control room for a medkit. Before chasing after the pilot, Jatham finishes the guard off with a blaster to the head. He then readies his rocket launcher and rounds the corner.

The pilot has reentered the core. He fires, BOOM!. The pilot is thrown from the core and stunned starts shooting wildly into the air with his laser. Jatham Lines up a shot with his sniper, and ZAP.

The pilot goes limp. Jatham doesn't have time to check if he's finished off or not, he runs to the core and tries to hack it... No luck. He sees several medical cabinets nearby so Jatham decides to heal up. LOCKED. He hacks the locks, relatively easily and fixes himself up. Turning around he sees the pilot is gone and there's a door open in the back of the room. He looks out a window and sees and escape pod launch and fly top speed away from the fray. Now he's got time. He messages his fleet. They immediately cease fire aside from a few missile blasts against the remaining turrets.

He calls for a backup boarding party. Together they sweep the ship and find the remaining guards. Two they capture, placing in the ship's brig, and the third is dealt with otherwise. They locate the encryption computer (faction block). Attempting to hack the computer proves useless. They attempt to get the captives to unlock the computer for them, but they are either too loyal, or just don't know. One is executed, the other begs for his life and swears allegiance to the boarding party.

They place a marker on the computer giving a core drill the exact position inside the ship. They then disable the shielding and evacuate the area of the ship.

Jatham stands near the window looking over the battlefield feeling good about this victory. Still raw from his earlier wounds, his arm throbs, but he likes the feeling. Suddenly, Jatham gasps in horror as an enemy flagship drops out of hyperspace and incinerates the Core drilling ship. Oh crap, the pilot's back for his ship, but this time he's got friends.

    Cool story, bro.

Yeah, this is the kind of thing I wish could happen in starmade. Hopefully at some point it will be possible.

Partial solution to interior/exterior shielding (3rd also provides a solution to atmosphere).
1 : Everything is interior but the blocks being at least topmost, bottommost, leftmost, rightmost, rearmost, frontmost.
    . . . . X X ...
    . X . . . W ...
    X X X X W I ...
    X I I I I I ...

    X = covered
    I = not covered
W = not covered weak spots.
While 1. does not work for all ships, it works for most ships and is relatively easy to calculate (though it could increase lag after adding blocks).
2 : Do it like Blockade Runner.
In Blockade Runner blocks can have content and texture separately.

In StarMade that would allow you to just place shield emitters (not capacitors or rechargers) under the hull parts you want to protect with shields.

That way you can have a nice texture and (hardened with shields) parts.
3 : Everything is exterior when it has no door leading to empty space which touches the ship's boundary box directly (only set for newly placed blocks and unset the interior/exterior bit in build mode).
While it is the most realistic, it could create lags, but would come together with atmosphere.

After leaving build mode, you basically place air blocks above all blocks but the topmost.
Then you remove all blocks touching space directly (without doors).

You need even blocks which are already placed to have this air-block bit set.
OR accept the possible exploit : plant (grass, ...) blocks could be used to separate space from interior.

The most obvious (to me) problem with boarding parties is:
    H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H
    H . . . . . . H H H H H H H H H H H
    H . .Hangar . / T D T D T .Core H H
    H . . Bay . . D T D T D T .Room H H
    H . . . . . . D / H H H H H H H H H
    H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H

You can only pass through a door if you clear the area triggers behind.
But area triggers also trigger once an adjacent (door area trigger ...) block gets killed.
Which would trigger a damage pulse or other death-trap.

The first thing needed is to make it so players dont get flung out of the ship as soon as the pilot decides to accelerate

    And gravity alignment.
(I think it's set to spacebar as default, i changed it to RSHIFT)
Magboots would be much more fun than *click* and you are attached to a ship

I'd be against faster astronauts. Ships that can attach themselves (kind of forced docking) temporarily to enemy vessel would be more reasonable. It'd allow somewhat believable boarding through the use of troop transport shuttles rather than seeing some guys going EVA and chasing spaceships.

Also, it's kind of old thread you've necroed there.
