It appears that there is some disagreement among the community, including @kupu as to what the purpose of a new thread actually is. Is it for a different topic, a different category, separation of related but dissimilar information for the sake of organization, or what?
It depends on how the thread is written. IMO
If the OP links to other threads, it can be for organization purposes.
If not, it is to be assumed, that this thread is supposed to be a standalone thread.
The odd thing is, @kupu was taking exception to me making about three planet-related threads, as well as participating in other discussions about planets. I still don't know why. The threads were all distinctly different suggestions, made on different days (weeks?) and not even related to each other except for the fact that they were all about planets. Plus, two of the suggestions were gunned down and forgotten some time ago so I assumed that they were no longer relevant.
Some peoples get annoyed seeing 20 planet-related threads after we got dodecahedron planets.
They are either blind to the difference between those threads, feel that these threads (together with other old) spam or spam the first suggestion page or the search results.
They just think "again those who don't know why their stuff will not work" and click "old" or "optimistic" or "funny".
I think it's a problem with the forum allowing peoples to find threads with <3 replys in search results and the actual discussion forums
(rather than a "waiting for feedback" section which filters spam" before it can be moved to suggestions/discussion by the op).
I think it is also a problem of linear discussions to produce 10+ pages containing not all helpful opinions in a "Pro-Contra" list.
We want something we know it exists but which we can't describe,
thus we say we want something even if we actually just think we want.
Your aforementioned suggestion could of succinctly been suggested in a thread pertaining to planet shapes as the source material you quote was being discussed at the time.
You received no lock or warning, no moderation of any sort. Simply a suggestion to keep things in relevant places to maintain the same contributors / audience for the topic?
This has always confused me. The moderators complain when a thread gets necro'd. Fair enough. Then, they complain when someone makes the 42nd suggestion for this thing claiming they clearly didnt look around and should have posted on the same thread so that it's easy to find the suggestions. Seems like the moderation needs to sit down and decide how they are actually going to moderate, and then actually stick to it.

.
@therimmer96 this isn't about the moderator team though. It's simply myself suggesting the same discussion material is discussed in the same place to help the quality of information.
