i'd like to be able to navigate the coordinate system of sectors manually. i'd like to see a toggle in flight mode that would add a graphic overlay of the grid patter the sectors are layed out in as you fly, so you know which way is "z+" or which way is "y-" from your current sector.

    thoughts?

A variation on this would be to add "+x", "+y", "-y", "+z" etc. as labels to the existing adjacent sector diamonds on the hud. This will effectively and immediately show you the positive and negative x, y, and z coordinates, and you can quickly figure out where certain nearby sectors are, based on that. I think this would be a great boost to just turning in the right direction that would be relatively easy to implement in the game. For now, I get disoriented and have to go through each of the sector diamonds to find out which direction I need to go. And since it's always the last one you check, and turning is pretty slow, reorienting oneself can take an annoying amount of time.

Wait for it to load, it has to scan every sector in the system for information on what it contains. thats alot of data. It can take a while

I think after you press "P", you then have to press the left Shift button to pop up the map.
Tip: Try to keep your ship absolutely still before accessing the map, and try to point away from any objects, like spacestations, planets, and other ships.

    Press "P"
    ~insert overdramatic/joking tone~

BIG, RED, ALL-CAPS, BOLD, ITALICIZED, UNDERLINED "NOPE."

    ~end overdramatic/joking tone~

That has nothing to do with what the OP was talking about. In fact, it has no indication of x/y/z directions as far as I can see.

On another note, the whole map features is woefully insufficient and completely undocumented, making it the complete opposite of user friendly. Instead of saying "press P" you must give a full tutorial including all relevant controls and hotkeys if you want someone to use the map. Just saying "press P" and assuming someone will automatically be able to use that thing is rather rude in my opinion, so please don't do that.

I would have thought it was rather basic. There is a little marker that indicates you, and you can move around. want to find out what sector something is in? COUNT THEM.

I think another useful thing to add would be a velocity rose. Something that lets you know your ship's orientation, velocity and acceleration relative to the current viewpoint.

Except it doesn't show what is x, y and z, leaving you to go somewhere you know is y and somewhere you know is x to figure out what what is. And then you must not forget to not turn the map...

Okay, Mister know-it-all, how do I tell which way is x, y, and z? Which way is positive and which way is negative?

The way i would like to see this implemented, would be some what similar to the star trek online Astrometrics while in sector space.
