I'm planning on video storytelling using big ships, and part of that story features a big ancient spaceship that I found/discovered that follows a blueprint found at the crash site in an astrofield. This also comes into play with the Galactic Council of Planets, with various races and species, who utilize Titan Dreadnoughts to intimidate other planets and races into submission.
As you can see Size can be an intimidator, especially when it has the firepower to back it up and shielding. Space is still a dog vs dog battle for the alpha spot... Especially when you have a homeworld and cities, and population density. Then, with that comes trading, economics, and resources.
Then you have pirates, who try to take your stuff because they can! You may be just a colony of miners, with just replusers, tractor beams, and repair beams and manage with a few fighters for bandits, that come by once in a far, blue moon.
Earth is a newer player out in space, and the others in the Galactic Council are thousands of years old in a space-faring culture, and were seen as primitive next to those with the hands on experiences in space travel. The ship I now have is "mythic," which makes the Galactic Council of Planets worried, as the ship I have is ancient and older than the council. As Race and Species rise and fall in space, languages come and go, as well as technology.
As I started with mining and happened across some lost tribe of traders, I began trading with them, and they provided better refining methods and technology, so they could increase their shares. As properly refined ores take up far less cargo space, luckily, the trader guy was half empty on his return flight, and we struck up a deal, as my asteroid field is virgin and vast and has great wealth, but it is way far off the beaten trade routes. As they also found value in foods, clothing, and spices, art ect... As he was also expanding his trading business, there was also much competition involved. So when he crossed my path, and we formulated a mutual business partnership, as they also require the same stuff as we do.
When I was able to help repair their spaceship and provide the much nessary resourses, in fuel, water, and food. That made a big difference of keep returning. I travel back and forth to Earth via a wormhole and can travel to a busy shipping lane, and none are the wiser for it. I, too are in a competitive market, getting the leg up over others first can yield more profits.
With the extra supplies and newer culture "stuff" from Earth, the trader can find out what "works" for his business to secure financial means.
High interest in coffee, teas, and spices, fashion, and clothing, with art as well. As space travel, etc can and could be rather repetitive and mundane, breaking that routine up is rather profitable. As the trader and I spent some time over a couple of weeks. Of getting things listed and done for their return trip.
I was also able to secure technology for space engines, refining the fuel, mining and processing, as well as a galactic translator. The trader, in the meantime, needed a bigger vessel as the mining equipment is big and bulky, and what he would get in return for my minerals was more than enough for his business expansion to proceed. The trader has a few of his people to stay behind and help outwith my expansion into these newer technologies. The other was an advance into long-distance communications, as the trader would also be stopping every so often to deploy relay comm beacons, much like a private network.
This is why one might have a bigger shipyard for mining, and cargo ships can also be of great size.
