This question is really only one Schine can answer, but, seeing as there isn't anywhere else to post this...

Anyone know what impact the Universe update will have on old blueprints? I'm wondering if I should bother with elaborate designs if they won't work in the new universe.

Hopefully the folks at Schine have had plenty of time isolated at home to work on updating this game during this lovely pandemic year! :P

No impact. You can take a blueprint from 2012 and load it in, the only thing that won't work is the powers/weapons due to changes in those systems. (And maybe some deprecated blocks)

Awesome! So make hulls with engines, but plan on ripping out all other systems in the new universe.

Ran into a few problems with the Linux launcher that I logged. Runs when launched from Steam though. These will probably be resolved if you are developing against Java 11/14, except for the XML parse error in T3224. T3223 deals with the launcher being run outside of Steam on Ubuntu 20.04.

I actually load old blueprints all the time, it's nice to see how much building has evolved and seek inspiration or new ideas from people that once played the same game, posted on the same forums, and did something they shared in the docks that you are now looking to for ideas. Exactly for that, so that it can last and it can influence future players. I may have overextended but it's just that I think it's a very good practice

Very true! Community Content has some crazy stuff when you look back in it. Depreciated docks can make some of them "explode" in newer versions but that's not such a big deal if they're cool enough to be worth the effort of gutting.

There's a couple of really neat ones from '14-16 that were "massive lag monsters" but are by today's standards "medium detail" builds.

I kinda wish Keptic uploaded his abandonware Charon ships...

My main concern was with the overhaul with the universe update will be coming out at some unspecified time in the future. Sometimes huge code updates like these break comparability. The power update really messed with some of my old builds (especially when I was using caps to double for lighting) but actually made it easier to design some of my smaller ships. I find it fun cramming as much stuff into a 10x10 or smaller cube and still make it not look like a cube ship, or a ship that you couldn't actually sit in and fly.
