One thing I find that is most difficult for me is how hard it is to find a decent server for me to play on with my buddy. We have jumped around between several fo the servers but after one issue or another, from unstable connections to the server not allowing blueprints, it has become tedious to restart progress over and over. We have tried to set up our own server, but that is something I don't understand how to do.
It would make things so much easier if I could use steam to host a multiplayer server for me, and my friends on steam could connect to me directly. Games like Terraria take advantage of this, and it makes things much easier for me, as someone who doesn't know anything about networks.

So you're suggesting Starmade (a non steamworks game) implement steamworks and thereby divide the player base between those that use steam, and those that "dont do drm!"? *- thats pretty much what it amounts to. I would think a good deal of players would be against that.

Might be better to figure out a middle ground for you and your friend - beginning with which parts of the world you are in (ie USA, EU etc) - surely we can help there.
Some people here can even help you on the setting up your own server side of things.

    Edit:
*Legally, steam is a subscription service, not a store where you actually buy things, hence the drm line of thinking for a proportion of people - never mind the forced client.

you really have no clue what you are talking about... just ranting against something.

Teraria can be Played on various ways and does not nessesaryly need Steam.
it just had the option for people who use it through steam to easy connect to each others games.

this would in NO WAY reduce anything People without steam can do. just the opposite. it will only ADD options.
and people playing a game hosted on a steam machin can still be connected to the "normal" hard way (Online IP)

so plz stop arguing about things you clearly know nothing about Sachys.

Actually I know plenty kid - and I am correct in what I state. Maybe you should read into what I have said.

Yes Terraria can be played various ways and does not neccesarily need Steam (personally I have a drm free copy from GOG), however, to play with friends connecting using steamworks, I require a copy with steamworks. So far not crossplay functionality has been added. of course we can still connect directly to private / personally hosted servers, but thats not what the OP is asking about.

Now, go sit in the corner.

if my english looks like im jung because of my spelling this might relate to english not being my first language.

and you are still wrong. If this really is true for terraria wich i suspect is not. "we can try i can open a game and you can try to connect with your non steam version. it should work. and if its not then it is not related to the steamworks because there are plenty of games where steam and non steam users can play together without any issues so the problem might lie in the way terraria is programmed. or in the stettings the host made....

Well aren't you a delightful little sunflower. You'd best show a little respect, else you find yourself in my bad books.

Okay, lets get back on track and try and help out the OP.

One thing I find that is most difficult for me is how hard it is to find a decent server for me to play on with my buddy. .
As I asked before, an idea of geographical location may help us in helping you (ie USA, EU and so on).

When I play, the other major member of my faction is based out in the middle of nowhere in the US, I myself am in the UK. For whatever reason, we have found (near vanilla) EU servers to give a more balanced ping for us, than many of the others on offer. At times that can be problematic, but that doesnt stop us playing.
So, lets try and get you somewhere, eh? :)
