Whatever happened to occlusion culling?

    We had it for a few updates, it broke and was disabled, and then it never came back. What happened?

    It was too intensive and they went for other kind of optimizations that didn't work with that, it was said in a update post.

    Hi,

    We had it for a few updates, it broke and was disabled, and then it never came back. What happened?
    The occlusion culling code was behind other code (occluded) in the list of things for the developers to do, and got disabled (culled). ;)

    Nah you can enable it by editing settings.cfg. It works well enough, as long as your CPU can keep up. Large entities can cause more lag than with it off though. So it's about finding a balance.

    If it can be enabled with the config settings then I am sure we will look at getting it back sometime in the future. Right now schema is doing optimizations that should lessen the strain in other areas like planets or the recent changes to weapons.
