Quick question, the quality of the screencaps I get using the standard in-game F6 method are fairly low.

Is there a setting somewhere that will allow me to crank that up?

What? I can't see any difference between screenshots and in-game graphics, and I never cranked anything up for that. Does that also happen with vanilla graphic settings?

Weird, I tried making some examples, and I think its just my graphics program that displays them funny.

Sometimes I get a screenshot that has a white background instead of stars.

Try posting them in the thread, Edymnion? More eyes means figuring out what the issue might be.

Thats just it, they look fine when I post them here.

Here's the screenshot out of Starmade with F6:

See? Looks fine here. Let me print screen of what I see in my editor, see if the distortion will show up...

There we go, looks like it shows up this way.

See how the nebula looks like a low resolution gif? I have no idea why it shows up that way in my Paintshop Pro, but it does. Looks fine later though.

Just as it would indicate with a GIF image, the screenshot indicates a lower color pallet. You might check to see if your desktop is somehow set to 16-bit color, which might create this posterized look. (Your game might set the color level to 32 bit, while your desktop would return to 16 bit outside the game, reducing the number of colors available.)

Check out the bottom of this page for a suggestion on what to look for to correct the bits of color available on the desktop.

One other thing you can check is the amount of bits your program uses by default for images. You may have to make some custom settings when making a project, then import the image into it. I had an issue with Photoshop setting some things too low for some reason. Was quite a while back but your program may be doing something similar.

    Nope.

You're probably in a sector with no background. As you get to the edges of a system, the background fades to black before the new one fades in. The opacity setting on the skybox is saved to the screenshot, without the black background that the game has.
