For any entity on the map that is red to you, if you move the advanced build mode camera into it (should be detectable via "collision"), you render a black screen with the message that the enemy ship disrupts your sensors, and it prompts you to center your view on your own core again or stay where you are in case the position is no longer within an enemy entity.

I'd even say it should apply to neutral entities too.
This gets weird for new players that don't know or understand faction blocks. I really wish personal was the natural state of a ship and neutral was special state of public.

This is exactly why I limited the suggestion to hostile ships (although I would personally actually wish for *any* ship to not render in advanced buildmode unless you are actually inside the core or a build block - yes, even allied ships). Hostiles are the most important part and it would not modify the experience of new players in any way (buildmode scanning of enemies isn't something they should learn in the first place).

Hell go whole hog and drop everything but the current entity and its docking chain out of the render queue.

Basically same as making anything but the ship you are working on invisible.

Could be confusing and you might find people sneaking up on you. How about make the 'non-you' entities opaque and angry-red.

Build mode already pops up a warning overlay, a little extra info can warn people of that.
Much more prominent damage flash/warning could also help.

If you are caught with your pants down in build mode its pretty like you would have been caught with your pants down anyway.
