    I'll keep it brief.

My drones have their docker fairly well offset from the camera due to how my rail launch and recovery is set up. Makes it very annoying to try and jiggle back and forth trying to hit the sweet spot for magnetic docking to make it latch onto the pickup point when I'm having to reload drones (like say when I am switching out a mining drone load for a combat drone load on my carrier).

Would be ever so nice if I could just use the docking beam.

I gotta agree with this. I can't really think of a reason why this shouldn't be implemented.

You can transform a pickup rail (not a pickup point, though) into a basic rail via logic and then target it with your docking beam. A less cumbersome method would be preferrable of course.

I don't believe that would allow for drones/fighters to remember the pick up point for redocking, so it wouldn't really work for what I believe this thread is going for.

Put a pickup rail (PR) and a shootout (SO) in front of the pickup point PP:
    PR-SO-PP-PR-PR-...
Then change the first pickup rail to a basic rail and dock to it.

The whole docking block stuff is a bit … bronze-age.

Can anyone tell me why the end of pickup rails is not automatically the pickup point?

I would just make a field of pickup points.
