Pretty simple idea, more colors of force field. Keep the three different texture fields we have now, but do them similar to how weapon colors are set. Place the force fields and press C on the light, (shift)V on the force field, get any color of light for your fields.

I'm pretty sure this would require extra data per block or require forcefields to be entities like weapon fire.

I don't see why we couldn't just have a forcefield for every color.

Mostly to save space in inventory, including in creative mode. I thought it might be easier since they already have the ability to do this with other things, and we already have all the light blocks.

Edit: As well as giving us the ability to have any color with any forcefieled texture, as opposed to making a bunch of new textures. I like the three textures we already have, I just want to be able to use them in any color.

Slabs still have a unique ID, you just can't obtain their blocks normally. You could have a color and texture selector for forcefields, just keep in mind that it'd be a separate ID for each combination.

Personally, I'd prefer a unique texture for each forcefield color. It would cut down on ID usage a lot and it'd make each one more unique.

I think turning forcefields into entities like weapon fire would be best. Then you could convert an entire forcefield group into a unified entity with special effects. (For instance, maybe the blue one physcially moves in waves like water on a breezy day. Maybe the red one will "flow" like lava.)

I can foresee some lag issues and ruined builds from something like that.

Right on, I have no idea how that stuff works so I'll defer to knowledge. I'd just like to have more options of color.

This can be easily accomplished, per Lecic's post above, as just a player/server mod that introduces several new custom textures and block IDs to make separate blocks for new forcefield colors.

Eventually, though, the devs are going to have to open up more blockIDs for us players to use and customize. The current 256 go way too fast and are way too full with the current block set.
