Not so much a gamplay suggestion as a distribution model request.

Keep a version of the game that doesn't require Steam to play.

I hate Steam, I hate it so very much. I hate it's ads, I hate it's constant attempts to shove me into a community I don't want to be in, I hate it deciding to update itself before I can play anything on it (and it always manages to "forget" I have it set to offline mode, not to mention it constantly prompting me to go online every single time I start a single player game), I hate the (albeit minimal) resource cost to have it running, and I hate the fact its DRM for games I have physical copies of.

Unless its a super Class AAA title like Civilization or Elder Scrolls, I won't buy a game that requires Steam to play. I abandoned the new Sim City not because of the bugs, but because I hated Origins and the Always Online excuse for DRM that ruined single player.

So yeah, please, always keep a stand-alone executable.

Man, you don't like Steam, do you?
Steam isn't a terrible cost for games like this, but yeah, having a separate executable is nice. Might result in more profit for Schema when it becomes a purchased game only, because they're not running through that intermediary. Although, perhaps running Steam will reach more players ... hmm... yay economics!!

Already covered in the past. There will always be the non-steam version acquirable from the starmade website.

    I purchased StarMade thru Steam.
I never use Steam to run or update the game.
The launcher can be run manually, just make a shortcut.

This is true you can just pin the launcher to the taskbar and bypass steam.

Yup, you used to be able to bypass Steam on everything by going straight to the executable directly, but more and more they are building Steam into the main game itself.

Good to hear that Schine says they'll keep the option open.

You can still do this? We haven't added any Steam integration since we first released the game on Steam.

I've tried on games like Skyrim, even going straight to the the .exe still launches Steam.

Skyrim has Achievements and shit, as does many other games on steam, which is probably why they launch steam as well.

Starmade however does not need steam at all, in fact I honestly believe it works worse on steam, as do other MMO type games that have a non-steam option. It's already been confirmed that there will be a non-steam version though, so why the worry?

Which one was it that got caught spying on the users? Wasn't Steam, I wanna say Origin because its a shitty thing that I can easily see EA doing.

about users not being owners of a rightful copy but merely license holders
licenses they can retract for any reason

ofs this is one of those things I read .. but cant confirm

Governments have been known to spy on players in World of Warcraft.
Steam will only trace the servers that cheating software accesses.
E-Sports Entertainment Association (ESEA) turned their entire player network into a 14,000-strong bitcoin mining botnet.
EA's Origin has plenty of articles about them spying, or at least maintaining the option to spy on its players in its EULA.

I use steam and I don't have emails from it, ads, or this community thing you are talking about.
Are we both using the same thing?

Unless you mean the friends thing, which i personally like. I only invite people I know (Zyrr unblock me pls) and has actually made me more social and games more enjoyable.
And the comunity workshop section is a great place to get mods for games from without visiting those OTHER sites which I wont mention because they game me viruses while getting mods for Sins of a Solar Empire.

Yeah, the game library and community workshop (and the screenshot key) are pretty much the features I use.

I don't know what kind of steam you downloaded, but I would get it checked out.

He is probably talking about the latest news thing that tries to sell you games that opens on relaunch.

I do mean the friends thing. I don't want people to know what I'm playing, when I'm playing it, or anything else like that. Or the friends emails through it, or the achievements, or any of the rest of that.

And you don't get ads for whatever game they have on sale whenever you open Steam? I can't open the thing without it blasting me with their deals on games I don't want in the first place.

When I buy a boxed game, I want to play that game. Period. I don't want ANYTHING else at that moment but to play that game. Anything that makes me jump through hoops to update and load anything other than that game, I don't want. I don't want some third party program telling me I HAVE to update the game before I can even play it in single player.

I just really, really hate Steam and everything it is. I don't want a game manager, I don't want a hub to "keep in touch with my friends", and I sure as hell don't want to run potential spyware just so they can check up on me to see if that physical copy I bought is still legit. I remember when Spore got 1 starred into the GROUND for that kind of nonsense (well, that was more th "3 installs only" bit, but the always online DRM checking to see if you had a legit copy was part of it).

    Just don't friend people?
    I don't.

But that doesn't mean I'm not forced to have software I don't want with capabilities I don't want even being on my computer in order to play a game I do want.

You have to admit though that having games you DO want go on sale for a pretty low price is a + right?

Nope, not to me its not.
When a game I want comes out, I buy it then.

I have never bought a single game on a Steam sale. I either bought it when it came out at regular price, or I didn't want it.

I am not kidding in any way when I say there is not a single thing about Steam I enjoy or want on my computer.
