To me, I always just think about how asininely profitable FO and ES are for Bethesda, and then I can't help thinking about how much more money they would've had to spend to hire a few more background voice actors...
We all know any extra money needs to go into the programmers.

    Would voices be nice? Sure.

Would the devs be able to pay multiple people to do voice acting? No.

Would I like it if hundreds/thousands of NPCs in the universe shared the same couple of voices? No.

Bottom line: No. There's just going to be too many different NPCs and getting enough voices for them would be too much even for large video game companies (like skyrim mentioned above only having something like 7 voice actors for generic NPCs). In my opinion onomatopeas like in Zelda games would work much better in starmade's setting.

Also, I think that the poll isn't biased enough.

Unfortunately you have some pretty good points there. This feaature is definitely something which should be considered a long term goal and is something which will only get some thoughts from the devs if the game will start to get recognition and enough support.

Actually something i would propose is that because of the great community and the much anticipation from the community for the game's future maybe we could gather enough people with the proper equipment and talent to make something and offer the devs some help from our part in the whole deal. There have been examples from the devs choosing people from the community to voice videos on their youtube channel why not go for something bigger? Maybe 5 or more years ago this would be something i would not think of but today i think there are many people who would have the equipment to makes something like this happen.

I know this may sound pretentious but i think with enough effort from the community and enough support from the devs part we could pull this off.

im not disagreeing with this, heck I would love to make some voice samples. But I think at this time Schine is no longer taking unofficial work from the community and placing them in game.

As a compromise i would love for them to put a kind of gibberish language, something like simish into the game and make it so players can swap out all the sound files for their own voices. That way players can mod the game to have voice by using the games own systems.

Ideally the ai is scriptable and you just play the file with text based on language selection.

This. I don't think cheap voice acting has ever sounded good, and Starmade isn't a big enough production to justify that kind of spending (or even afford it probably). On top of that a lot of Starmade is procedurally generated, and depending on how that is handled with NPCs there may be a lot of procedurally generated dialogue, which isn't possible to do with voice acting in any convincing way.

Very few people understand what "Took an arrow in the knee" actually means. It's actually a term used for they got married.
No, it isn't. That was a silly rumor that went around.

There are no recorded historical uses of it in that context. Plus, there were many other "I used to be an adventurer until I took an X in the Y" like "sword in the gut" that the guards said as well, making it quite clear that it was just what it appeared to be at face value.

Huh, I swear I remember hearing variations on it. Though it could very well have been a mod, I had several flavor enhancement mods installed.

But no, there is no Scandinavian saying of that. It (the idea that its referring to marriage) is entirely made up after Skyrim came out. There are interviews with the developers where they specifically talk about that line, and they just say they made it up to give the guards more personality. They never reference any marriage slang, and you won't find any references to it's use as such that predate Skyrim's release date.

You don't even have a reason.
    Ok fair enough.
I dont want to have every thing in the game walking up and talking to me in a voice that sounds like schema in a state of catatonic depression, recorded at 2am on a web cam mic.

Making voice audio isnt some simple fast thing if it is to be done correctly, and if one does not have an audiogenic voice (yes i made that word up) then they simply don't.
Blowing the budget to hire some voice actors, and stopping everything to write scripts, do recording sessions, code the voice scripts into the game etc puts everything else on the back burner.

And for what at this point?
It hasn't furthered the game mechanics, hasnt gotten in any new playability feature, hasnt optimised MP servers, or an endless list of other things.
It didnt contribute to taking the current game forward.

Any of the things where i can see voice being a great addition to the game, dont even exist in the game yet to add voice to.
Id rather have those built 1st.
