Many players especially ones that are early in game will understand how weak basic hull and metal mesh are and how vulnerable they are to missiles. however, Missiles have an absolute blast radius that they cant get higher, Also missiles will detonate on contact with anything at all including mesh and hull, So the perfect early-game defense would be to build this way:

First you build an inner hull which is made of your limited armor supplies, It contains your core and systems and interior.

Then you build an outer hull, Which is 20-50 blocks larger then the inner hull out of metal mesh or basic hull.

Remember to keep the space between the outer and inner empty. Because it would just be destroyed anyway.

The reason for a double hull is that missiles have an absolute blast and will detonate upon any contact. and by making an outer hull out of cheap materials you can force the missile to detonate before making contact with anything important Which is why you leave the space between empty.

Or you could throw some shield caps on your ship, the alpha station doesn't have that menacing of a missile.

Mining an asteroid and converting the colored rock into carved stone sells for quite a bit if you cant find rammet, and you can purchase a good amount of shields from a shop then.

Having spikes or other things on your ship to detonate the missiles works too, and reduces the damage to negate-able values allowing your shields to stay up longer.

Yes but you can produce a near infinite amount of mesh and by producing an outer hull that can detonate any missile before it hits the main hull and as long as the missile blast radius isnt too much you will only have a hole in the outer layer and the actual ship will be unharmed.

Area triggers serve the same function, and can be used to make a cool "shield bubble" too.

if the missile damage exceeds the maximum amount of shields the damage will continue on to your hull.
so a strong enough missile will be able to take out your shields completely and take half of your ship with it.

Exactly But if the missile is detonated at a safe distance from your inner hull by a disposable outer one then you just survived. ;)

But what if you plan to fight? What happens when the next missile comes in? What are the chances it could pass through the hole?

    UNLESS WE HAVE IT ROTATE

    YEEAAHHHH!!!
    rotating it would be cool

Definitely would be a good idea to rotate it, But the whole idea is so that someone just starting a new survival wont get sniped by an Alpha.

If i understand this correctly this is to make your ship survive a little longer.
So if ti "absorbs" the first hit that costs you only some expendable hull that would be ok with me. Other wise it would rip through you hull and possibly damage vital ship systems.

And why would the armor need to rotate? The regular armor on your ship does not rotate either, or does it?
So if your shields are down this will catch a few hits, as ships are moving and can rotate as well. So hitting the holes is not that trivial.

But a rotating missile catcher armor... it would look cool.
But as it is a docked entity it would get damaged before the main ships shields are completly down.
