If I can have a Horse in Minecraft, why can't I have a Goddamn Space Raptor in Starmade?

Seriously though, we're eventually getting dynamic flora and fauna for planets, which will be great. However, it would be awesome to include animals you can train to be mounts! This would shorten the time taken to move around the surface of a Planet in a somewhat stylish way (at least until some-kind of viable ground vehicle mechanic can be worked-out and implemented).

I never exactly liked mounts in games, mostly because they were only a little faster than yourself and can be used anywhere you can go by foot.
Even in a marketplace when buying armour, you ride your mount in these games, making the mount a part of your character almost any time - just like metal suits protecting you from physical strikes.

This is counter-intuitive to character-creation (character-models) which are customable. When using a mount I often just get ugly stock-choices for it and have to use it most of the time.

We don't ride horses today, but use motorcycles or cars for a reason. We can let them stand somewhere without worrying about them needing food, getting sick, requiring as much attention. These machines don't require rest, except a comparatively short tank stop, despite running at full efficiency most of the time.

Thus, you either go by foot, or you have a small motorcycle around you, which you might even call toward you using it's autopilot.

If schema can make this a non-issue, I agree that it is a good idea. But only then.

It would be neat to have mounts that could do things like spew acid on, bite, and claw blocks and enemies but in return are slow, bulky, and can die. It would add a bunch of new aspects to planetary battles! A player could have some acid-spewing monster work on melting through a landed ship's door as if it were using a torch beam while other players provided cover-fire.

Also, fauna-drawn chariots out of blocks for races, anyone? :D

No i wouldnt want to ride a raptor i would rather train them to be my death machines along with other fauna to ether be pets or be companions in a battle as opposed to them being a horse

First of all this is not entirely true. People in many places still ride horses as a tradition and the bond between man and beast can be seen when working with these majestic animals. I'd be in support of having mounts, and pets, or alien comrades. Anything that adds a level of fun and immersion to the game. I do not think they should be superior to other ground transportation, like motorcycles for example, but I do not think that they should not exist either. Mounts could be anything from hovercraft to 3-headed-alien-sand-camel. :p

I think they should be both, when applicable. Obviously you couldn't ride super-small creature, but anything sizable and intelligent enough to ride, I'm all for it. However, I do tend to agree that it shouldn't interfere with the core values of the game. And taming them to be companions sounds even more valuable to me.

Indeed in all honesty i see mounting a raptor sized animal being a rarely used feature unless you desperately need a faster mode of transport then by foot and you have the means to pursue it i could see such a thing also being sell able to as well and fetching a high price perhaps we could have a level for each fauna after getting enough xp they get stronger and faster

Levels from 1 being lowest 10 being highest to also add an rpg element into starmade

It's a good idea, i think it is a necessity to have fauna you can mount. I don't think it would be long to implement : there is already a mechanic to get linked to an entity and a mechanic to control an entity.

I generalized it a bit too much maybe. SM has 1000m long space ships with an internal garden bigger than what the average human on earth owns or cares for.
Most peoples in cities see horses either as hobby of the rich, maybe except in places without good streets or fuel-supply. But not in industrialized countries where most peoples go to work at 6am and get home 8pm (incl. getting up and eating) and find it tiresome to do work in the last 2-3 hours the day has left when you cleaned your apartment or washed clothes or whatever you do in that time. Animals need more attention and can't stay at a car-parking-place all day long.

Though I do agree this is true in most cases. I live in a town where many people own horses just a little ways out in the country and many people can't afford to pay for them, so the ranches near here allow riders to use their horses to ensure they get properly acclimated to people for riding trails and traveling the rest of the year. Granted this is a bit of a hick town, but it's not an uncommon thing here. I've traveled a lot of the US and a lot of places you go to relax or vacation you can find horses except in big cities.

This is a valid point for a thriving industrialised civilisation, but I don't expect every planet I visit in StarMade to have a thriving industrialised civilisation. If visiting a developing or non-colonised world (or if you've crash-landed), it'd be nice to have a cheap alternative to manufacturing motorcycles.

I see a mount as a temporary up-grade to your character. If you don't already have a motorcycle handy (which we don't presently in the game), then you can utilise a nearby animal until you get one. The "stock-choice" would vary from planet to planet. So some planets might have horse-like animals appropriate for mounts, others Raptors or even giant Sandworms

If Schema create a new hand-held device called a "Tamer", you could point it at an animal and gain temporary control of it. Once you de-activate the Tamer, then it wanders back off into the wild, thus eliminating the need for caring for it should you decide not to bother keeping it.

While I'm not opposed to the idea, I'd only really like it if it was packaged in with natives on planets etc.

You mean intelligent natives? Like the Sandpeople from Star Wars, or the Navi from Avatar?

Wonderfully put! I was going to post something along these lines yesterday but couldn't find a good enough example, well done. =)

Just thought of another use for this device. You could lure fauna into a Nature Reserve area, close the gates and then freely build on the rest of the planet knowing you wont be wiping out all indigenous life :)

Ultimately though, I'll be happy so long as I get my Space Raptor :D

Hell Yeah I want to ride a space whale! Another cool thing would be machine mounts, that you could reprogram and ride around. Just think about that. Who wouldn't want to ride a Matrix Sentinel? for example, I think it's clear the El_Poulpy wnats too... :D

Mounts are miles ahead of motorcycles, right from the start.

We already walk and jump, so modifying these things would seem straightforward to a simple caveman like me.

Anyone wanna fix the collision-lag issue and devise a brand new mechanic for wheeled vehicles? Probably yes, but it will take some time and effort by smarter people than me. ;)

Just please, whatever else, don't allow laser-cannons on the Dino-Raptor.o_O

I won't mind mounts in the game for people who'll use them, but unless there is a significant advantage to using them versus taking a suborbital flight to where I wanted to go, I probably wouldn't use them. But I do think they should be an option.
