I didn't want to post this in suggestions because its more of a discussion.
Would you like to play starmade as a race other then human? Why?

Thanks Criss! I definitely thought it would be neat, and fit with whatever our cannon really is right now. I suppose I just wanted to see what other players thought. I was having a hard time trying to define what it would really mean to be a different race. I feel like size is the biggest one, as health and equipment don't mean too much right now, but that's probably going to change.I would mark this as recognized if it were not in the general forum.
Basically yes we want to explore that option. It will take some work because different races means different models and animations and textures. All player gear either has to work or has to be made anew for each new playable race. It certainly fits with our game however so we will explore this later on once we have managed to get in general flora and fauna.
Thats true for right now, but I think I'm asking more as what could it bring to the game if it wasn't just cosmetic. I know you can just change skin, but this is a space game. For example what if you had 4 legs? Would it mean much? Could we make it mean much and have fun?I would say yes. But honestly, you can already by downloading a skin that isn't human. Sure it's just cosmetic, but at the same time, isn't being human in the game just a cosmetic thing as well? I don't see "races" as a thing that's needed. You can just get a skin, and say you're a Jefferson Starship for all anyone cares.
Maybe how it would work is that once we have AI roaming about the galaxy, and if they implement that skill system they talked briefly about for them. We could have it so that specific races of AI have different learning rates for specific skills? Or like you say, easier to trade with? I'm not sure about having 4 legs. (though that'd be pretty cool) but there are things that races could do for the game later on that would seem interesting. Earlier I was just expressing that at the moment, you can be any race you wish.Thats true for right now, but I think I'm asking more as what could it bring to the game if it wasn't just cosmetic. I know you can just change skin, but this is a space game. For example what if you had 4 legs? Would it mean much? Could we make it mean much and have fun?
I really think race may play more into how the NPC system would likely work. Meaning its easier to trade with your own race? Or recruit that race? Maybe they have particular traits you like. Specically reptiles like warmer areas of space with bigger suns so you get bonuses for owning and occupying those areas of space.
I strongly disagree. I have done that dren since Minecraft 5 friggin' years ago and it isn't working (for me at least). I NEED to play as an alien and not just another Star Trek humanoid trope. When it comes to truly alien beings I've been wanting to roleplay a Melnorme-esque being from Star Control II since summer (think Hynerian aka Rygel XVI from Farcape floating about).I would say yes.
I feel like I should have added a hell yes, and hell no now.I strongly disagree.
Huh? To your poll it's hell frelling yes from me!I feel like I should have added a hell yes, and hell no now.
Feh.. those are still too humanoid for my tastes. However digitigrade Kilrathi-esque race, that's awesome. There should be support for a feline -species!
At least implement Dwarf-Humans from high-gravity worlds and Tall Humans from low-gravity worlds. Maybe 1.3 min, 1.8 avg, 2.3 max? Because else they would not fit into easily into many corridors anymore.
..PURELY COSMETIC feature..
You have a good point actually, I guess a better thing would be to say "balanced" so maybe if you play as a Klingon you have more strength but less health or something. If it's a Kilrathi-esque race it's bloody better have more close-combat strength and health and ferocity by default and I would gladly pay to have alien races in but not only to be a frelling pureley cosmetic boll yotz.
I'm taking a break from this for now before I have another loss of control over rage and break something in real life yet again.
Those are actually really good ideas. I like the minor ship boosts, makes sense.Races with damage modifiers(mantis), health boosts(rockman), personal ship power/shield/speed boosts(engi/zoltan/mouse droid) or other things(Another one! Inventory boosts! Personal shields!) would be nice, maybe make some 2 blcoks wide, some taller, some longer, as long as theres no 1x1x1 race.( I hated in minecraft when an admin decited to morph into a baby wolf with the hitbox of a pixel) Not a bad idea, maybe make it posibble, per world, to unlock new races to morph into between logins in a server/sp world, or bought for cash.
No big bonuses, just 2s and 3% boosts to ships, and 50% boosts to personals.
Sorry for all the ftl refrences, it's a great example of race diversity.
I wouldn't mind skinning some giant space kitties again. It's been a while. Or perhaps even a Kzin. We could definitely use some space roaches too.Feh.. those are still too humanoid for my tastes. However digitigrade Kilrathi-esque race, that's awesome.
An Hynerian for example is 1x1x1, though you can make such race just a pixel or three smaller from the regular blocks. I can see no problem shooting that. In fact I insist having a 1x1x1 race too.Races with damage modifiers(mantis), health boosts(rockman), personal ship power/shield/speed boosts(engi/zoltan/mouse droid) or other things(Another one! Inventory boosts! Catgirl species, when? There should be support for a feline -species!
I think it would be a very good idea to implement a tiered approach to something like crew bonuses if each race gives different effects. That or the largest percentage race gives the bonus.
