Even if you align it that way you still need to power it from the planet. So you're building on the planet anyways. I get what you mean by rail docking it to the planet and having it "hover" but you still gotta power the thing, build all the way out to the ring anyways and at that point you've sort of negated any bonus in just having a donut. Taking into account all the effort it requires to calculate the exact positioning, well it removes a certain, creative freedom.

lemme just say : chalenge accepted. tomorrow i will bring up functional ring that either could be docked around planet either move couple of ships by using logic charged array of jump drives. or just be a fortification for existing station - ring with 32 turrets. ( 16 top 16 bottom).
i will show you what i mean

i MADE ring of radius... idk. i know it has a 1300 lenght and width

well. yea.its oversized as hell. but thats what it is. it docked to a planet. you can dock ships to that. and that could be UNDOCKED o_O

from a planet and just... WHOOOP - gone. enemies didnt saw any bigass mothership carriers

there's a pic of ship dock how its now (i built just 4 of them,cuz im laze to make 45*turned ones)

including turret towers (w/o turret) high is 133 or so. made of black hull so not that hard thing to spawn in on new server... (atleast not like my dreadnaughts :eek:

)
im putting promised earlier jump drives on logic clocks atm. from start to current took 3 hours
EDIT : and yea.im already considering chalenge as completed
