Problem: The launcher comes up fine, but once the game is updated and ready to go, hitting Start Game doesn't do anything. The launcher closes itself and no new processes come up.

Info: System specs aren't important since I ran the game just fine a month ago, but that was an unintentional hard drive wipe ago and I'm reinstalling everything. Here's some stuff about my Java version:
    java version "1.7.0_91"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.6.3) (7u91-2.6.3-0ubuntu0.14.04.1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.91-b01, mixed mode)
Possible solution: I haven't installed many things I normally take for granted, so I'm probably missing a dependency or two.

In starmade's installation folder, what does the latest logfile state after a launch-attempt? If there is none, it means there is some incompatibility with the version of java you installed(be it java itself, or some drivers).

There's no logfile, so I guess there's some form of incompatibility? IDK, I don't think I'm doing anything differently for this install. I even have the same drivers for my video card (NVIDIA binary driver, version 352.63, marked "proprietary, tested").

then, I have one more thing to try: open a terminal/console in the installation folder, and run "java -jar StarMade.jar -client"
The resulting error message should be helping.

Interesting. Launching the game directly (instead of using the starter) worked perfectly, but launching the game through the starter doesn't work. Maybe there's something up with my starter?

Anyone have any ideas on why my starter isn't launching the main game?

The best one could try is launching the launcher from console, and checking if it has any output when you press 'Start Game'.

The more you have loaded, the more boxes you will see appear in your cargo area.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">There were some main concerns for it in terms of scalability, organization, usability and migration which I hope we solved sufficiently.</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Since it&rsquo;s impossible to organize your things into different little boxes with limited capacity, your storage block will still be the main piece to use. Because having a limit on both slots and stack capacity would be tedious, we decided to just have a overall capacity for a storage with unlimited slots. Each item&rsquo;s needed space in the inventory is represented by its volume (which defaults to mass, but can be adapted in the block config if needed).</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">So basically, you can fill up your storage with as many slots as you like, as long as the total volume of all items is within capacity.</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Because of this sudden change, penalties for being over-capacity are turned off by default in the server config. These penalties will be switched ON by default in future updates. A player whose inventory is over-capacity will move more slowly, and a ship which is over-capacity will leak items out of storage over time.</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">So how do you increase that base capacity each storage gets?</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">It&rsquo;s simple: just get a few Cargo Area blocks and connect them to your storage. Each block adds capacity to your storage block. They are non-physical and not visible as long as they are empty, but they will fill up with the inventory reaching its capacity.</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Keep in mind that items in storage now also add mass to your ship. It&rsquo;s a lot less mass than it would add if you would build the blocks on your ship by using the patented &ldquo;warp storage technology&rdquo;, which stores most of the mass in the void.</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Also please note that the balance is by no means final. We put it at the lower end, because buffing it in future version is a lot easier than nerfing (and also causes less anger amongst players ;) ).</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><h3 dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:16pt;margin-bottom:4pt;"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Factory changes</span></h3><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">This same cargo capacity concept also now goes for factories and shipyards. Factories also now only pull as many items as they need to do one tick, so they won&rsquo;t fill up. And instead of sending a signal to adjacent Activation (full &lt;-&gt; not full) and &lsquo;OR&rsquo; blocks (empty &lt;-&gt; nonempty), they will send it to connected ones.</span></p><p>&nbsp;</p><h3 dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:16pt;margin-bottom:4pt;"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Docked Cargo pulling</span></h3><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Cargo can now be transferred from or to docked entities. Just connect your docker and rail to the storage you want to pull from or of, then deactivate pulling on the one you want to be pulled from, and it will pull to the other just like it would on the same entity. </span></p><p><br />&nbsp;</p><h2 dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:18pt;margin-bottom:6pt;"><span style="font-size: 21.3333px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Docking on contact</span></h2><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">You can now also dock to rails by physically touching them with your docker block. I'm just poking in the dark here as I don't use the launcher, but doesn't it have some configuration options for the Java environment where you can specify the allotted memory for client and server? Maybe something went wrong there?

If everything else fails, at least now you know how you can launch the game directly... ;)

Uninstalling/reinstalling the game fixed the issue. Still odd, though.

Change your Java maybe. Use the oracle build.
Just as a heads up, I'm using OpenJDK/Icedtea 1.7 (Java 7) here and it runs StarMade just fine. It does currently not run under version 1.8 (Java 8). However I'm running Gentoo, not Ubuntu.

    EDIT:
Just double checked to be sure, turns out it's the same version the OP uses.
    Code:
    java version "1.7.0_91"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.6.3) (Gentoo icedtea-7.2.6.3-r2)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.91-b01, mixed mode)
Could you maybe post the log output when you start the client directly ( java -jar StarMade.jar -client )?
    Code:
    $  LC_ALL=C LD_PRELOAD="libpthread.so.0 libGL.so.1" __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 java -Xms2G -Xmx8G -Xincgc -jar StarMade.jar -client 2>&1 | tee logfile.out
