Am I the only one who dislikes the fact that a 1/4 slab has the same mass and HP as those of a full block? Let alone all the material gone missing

I was bothered enough from the fact that a hull block didn't yield two wedges instead of one in the factory... :p

Kinda, but then again slabs take up the same build volume as entire blocks, so it's no that bad. The reason was probably code related tbh.

If you got two wedges for every hull block they would have to be made less effective and have 50% health otherwise you could cover your ship with cheaper to produce blocks that are just as effective as the full block. It's all in the name of balance, you don't have to worry about weak points in a ship just because you choose to use a wedge or a slab or the full block. Don't think of the blocks we have as being solid, perhaps they have an internal structure that isn't simply "cut" but is re-arranged. The actual thickness of the armor on the blocks doesn't change if it is 1/2 1/4 2/4...

Just think of them as being denser like if they were compressed from a full sized block.

Well yes, it would only make sense if wedges had 1/2 the hp and armour, as well as 1/2 the mass.

I wonder, will they ever make slabs have their own build hitboxes. For example, the ability to place 4 quarter slabs ontop of each other and only take up a single block's space.

If they ever allowed for that it'd open up a lot of room for more detailed things like doors and the like.
Not really possible for engine reasons. Each block, even if it only took up 1/64th of a block space and was a tiny teeny little cube, still takes up its space in the grid. You can't have two blocks in one grid space because each grid space is only allocated a certain amount of data storage, which is only enough for one block.

Makes sense in the real world? Yeah. Does it make sense gameplay mechanics wise? No. If wedges were in fact weaker this would greatly encourage boxy shapes and directly punish any designs built at 45 degrees.

On that topic, tetra/hepta angles add on 2 layers of weight, but can be pierced as 1 layer...
