Transporters shouldn't drop shields to 0%.

I understand that transporters need to be balanced somehow, but something about the way transporters completely flush your shield capacitors just doesn't make much sense to me. If anything, shields should be temporarily brought down (for, say, 5 seconds), then back up to whatever value they were prior to transport. The target ship shouldn't lose any shields at all; that is silly and I find it kind of pointless.

...Actually, come to think of it, if anything, the ability to drop or raise shields from a console could be added, and transporters could be made so that you can't transport unless both ships have lowered their shields...

I agree with either a "lower shields" feature (Use to regen energy) or a short drop in shields, not a full flush. Good idea!

Yeah. Basically, I just don't like the fact that, if someone has set their transporters to public, another player can drop their shields at will...

And then BOOM you're trapped. Have one ship constantly linking for a beam and another weapon boat to tear you to shreds.

in essence i agree but there is a simple solution, don't set your transporters to public

Doesn't star trek have it so that transporters are modulated to match the shield frequency of the ship they're on so you don't have to drop shields? So if you know the shield frequency of the ship you're trying to transport to then you neither of their shields should need to be down. Correct me if I'm wrong, not much of a star trek guy.

You're referring to Chief O'Brien, who was able to match the shield harmonics of the Enterprise's transporters to the Nebula-class USS Rutlage so that in the infinitesimally small windows where a part of the shield was down for a sensor sweep he was able to beam aboard. For normal operation shields up at all blocks all transports, except inter-ship.

I was pretty sure I saw that on TNG in some episode. Thanks.

Where did you see that the targeted ship get's it's shields dropped? Is that how it works?

...This also affects faction access, for the record... While your faction members (hopefully) mean you no harm I can see issues arising from how it drops your shields when someone transports to your ship :\

Frankly, I think you should be able to transport to faction ships without affecting shields at all, and you have to reduce shields to 0 on enemy ships to get 100% lock on. As for friendly non faction ships, it should depend on permissions.

I personally disagree, I would have it so the entire galaxy uses similar transport frequencies and so to transport you must lower shields. If the TG sells their transport tech, it'd make sense it uses the same freq.

my suggestion is to have a console or menu that can manually control shields. to allow transport shields would have to be below a certain % (say 50%). this means to transport onto a ship u would need them to lower there shields or u would have to use weapons to lower them your self. outgoing transports would automatically lower shields to the required % upon transport.

Transporters have always dropped shields in any story that I have ever read or watched. It's standard. But it shouldn't be the transporters themselves that control the shields. If shields are up, transport doesn't work, you just bounce. Shields should be dropped manually.

Yeah I really hate that shields drop to 0% and have to be charged again based on the recharge rate. This directly benefits those who like fast recharging shields and punishes anybody, like me, who usually goes for capacity over regen rate. It's perfectly acceptable that they drop in order to transport but to just dump your capacity and then having to wait for it to refill seems like a poor mechanic.

I hold the opposite opinion from the OP. Shields have the primary effect of turning coherent energy streams into incoherent energy streams. Which should have the incidental effect of turning a traveler on such an energy stream into a sort of fizzy soup.

For the game, I guess it depends on how you view the technology, is it a gang plank or a boarding grapple?

The thing I think I'd like to change is the always-on shields. Shields should be an energy-costly tactical choice. Put my shield system on my tactical menu.
