    I think the current factions system needs an overhaul. What i had in mind is a sort of feudal layout (Which would actually make since the idea being a bunch of mini factions each controlling their own land and owing allegiance to a central ruler.)

    Here is my thoughts on this:

    Governments:
    A government is basically like the existing factions except it requires at least one company and one clan to exist. A government also has a complex economy, And while it may be controlled by a king or an emperor the individual clans that make up the government all have enough power to make hell for the king if they wish, forcing leaders to have to keep their own clans happy. In fact a government has to have a dominant clan. The dominant clan is a clan that has achieved control over all others in the government and its leader has become king.

    Clans:
    A clan is like a mini government. it can claim territory and have its own ships. Clans can join governments, Resulting in the clans territory and ships and other claims such as stations and planets all become part of the main government, But the owning clan will still be dominant in that region and have control over its territory, The leader of a government really just rules on allowance being that a government consists of multiple clans and their territory and can easily be torn apart should the clans decide to leave.

    Corporations:
    A corporation a faction intent on making money, Members have to be paid, And if a company is part of a government then a certain percentage of money will go to that government as a tax. Corporations can make money through: Running a shop, A public shipyard, Mining asteroids and planets, Or even piracy and bounty hunting.

    I think these sorts of things would be best left for the players to create. In a sandbox game, I don't think it would be best to force factions to take on one of three structures.

    Like the idea, but agree that this needs to be player controlled.

    Lore on my server atm is that the ruling faction is the Galactic Federation, which has a Navy to police it's own territories, and the Federal Heroes (my admin faction) to act as marshals, but are also semi-independent and do some mercenary work to suplement their own finances.

    There are also multiple civilian corporations, such as Grooman Aerospace, who are part of the federation. The Trade Guild is independent, but is allied to the federation factions and sub factions to facilitate trade agreements.

    I'd like to be able to set up npc versions of these factions so that they can act without player interaction at least until I can get some players to fill those roles.

    These three structures, and more, could easily exist through more faction customization options for founders. Creation of subfactions, merging factions into subfactions, requiring member 'taxes' (customizable per level), giving member 'salaries' (customizable per level or per player), etc. and, most importantly, more/unlimited ranks and more rank-based access control.

    Um... no. This should be up to players to create with a system like "subfactions" or just letting us create custom ranks/rank branches.

    The reason why i suggest a feudal structure is that in the vastness of space it is hard for one government to control a large area of land and by having the empires divided into smaller governments that owe allegiance to the main leader.

    You should be able to structure your faction like that if you want, but it shouldn't be forced onto other factions who don't want to be split up into clans and corporations ruled by a king.

    There needs to be more complexity in the current faction system.

    I find that on larger servers this happens naturally anyway. One or two factions fight for control and their smaller allies act like the clans described in the OP. Subfactions or splinter factions allow for some independence within the ranks but still provides the support of the larger factions when shit hits the fan.

    There should be OPTIONS for faction creators to have more complexity. It shouldn't be a hardcoded system like the one you're suggesting. What if your faction is just you and some buddies who want to make a faction and not worry about having "clans" and "corporations" and "kings"?

    Then you do what eve does..... a corporation is the base form you make a corp you have your members you make the rules you set the tax etc you don't need to make an alliance but you can it would be the same way here you have the base level faction a faction can do everything a faction can do now then you have the next step up whatever that may be that merges all these factions together with one faction as the head faction and obviously its leader in charge of the "alliance, republic, kingdom, etc"

    Its really not that difficult you take the basic faction give it some more power (ability to set own customizable levels/tiers "along with the ability to set way more and more controllable permissions" then you allow that faction to promote itself to an alliance "or whatever you wanna call it" then you allow other factions to join said alliance factions remain independent but gain an "alliance" tag and share colors on the map etc (benefits below) )

    this system would have multiple benefits such as a mining faction and a military/trade/transport any combo really to join under a single color so if said mining faction needs to claim a new system it falls under the "alliance" claim enemies won't know for certain that your "alliance" is expanding its mining territories etc.

    Under this (new) system nothing would change except for the ability to join multiple factions together under a singular leadership or democracy or whatever factions would still psuedo retain their individual control of ships stations etc aka just because you are in an alliance with another faction doesn't mean they can come take ur ships and such but it creates a stronger group environment and dynamic.

    I feel like the OP idea is to limit factions - which can current already be corporations, clans, and governments as well as guilds, tribes, leagues, associations, partnerships, collectives or anything else ppl can think of - to only 3 concepts.

    Adding functionality to the faction system, like additional relationship statuses, ability to tax, etc would be great. limiting how players can name, style or conceive their faction would not be progress, IMO.

    I see this as more of a suggestion as to how one can structure their faction. As people have already said, it shouldn't be a single system forced unto players, players should be able to simply do this on their own.

    I feel that the OP raises a few good points. Considering that factions are currently flavorless with their structuring.

    Like clans, you could have Crews, which are for Capital/Motherships
