Spend some dedicated time just to polishing the atmosphere, aesthetic, and sound engine. These things are important for players to immerse themselves in the game world. Immersive games are almost always better, and add to the content of the game as much as a new mechanic.
Make sounds play properly, make weapon effects look good, add explosions, add thruster trails, add situation dependent music(ambient is classical, dogfight is tribal, capital war is tribal rock[sorta like BSG], assault on a massive base is some kind of intense classical chanting and heavy drums. not exactly but sorta like that).

Dude, chill the hell out; it's early alpha. Don't you think they're probably already working on all of that? Don't you think there might already be five or six actual, constructive threads about everything you listed already on these forums?

I've never seen why raw development needs to keep going before any polish. What are we aiming at before we can polish? ...No?

Devs, just balance the polish with raw development to make a great alpha game.

    EDIT: Also, look at this!

As much as I'd like to see all of that implemented, I really wouldn't expect any of it until late beta at the very least. Let's work out the bugs before we start polishing everything.

I can tell you that everything on this list aside from engine trails is already planned, in the works or still planned.

I don't think I like those. Leave them as a mod. What would it look like if your thrusters were all internal and you used something else to represent your engines?

There is already a mechanic in place to fix this... Currently thrusters will not render a plume if a block is adjacent to their rear face.

Then you'd be a fool. I think so, anyway.

No, they would not be a fool, stylistically different ships demand different types of engines. But the thing is, the problem he speaks of is already nonexistent since all people would have to do is make sure there was something directly behind their blocks of thrusters.

Sorry for my foolish opinion. I wasn't aware of the mechanic that stops the plumes. I still think they should be a mod rather than the default.

And having worked software development for over 15 years polishing now would be unwise. The possibility of spending time polishing something now that could be completely re-written before beta would be a waste of resources. I agree with Zaphord that mos or all of this won't get touched until beta.

Or, you know, you can wait until the game is out of alpha and feature complete and ramp up polish at that point. Like real developers do. With jobs and stuff. In the real world.

I fail to see exactly how my post wasn't constructive, if that was your implication. The post explained why I think it should be added and I did not bash Starmade. There's also no need to explain the mechanic of "music" or "thruster trails" those are easily understandable and generally have only one method of implementation that the common man will see.

PS: Did I sound angry or excited in my post? I spoke in short and concise sentences with very clear points.

I agree. It doesn't have to be in alpha for 3 years and then beta for 3 more years just to have some quick polishing done.
Or, you know, you can wait until the game is out of alpha and feature complete and ramp up polish at that point. Like real developers do. With jobs and stuff. In the real world.
The fact that they have jobs has nothing to do with this. If they spend 14 days on features or 14 days on polish it doesn't change anything. It's 14 days of work. I'm just saying that atmosphere and immersion is as much a feature as a new mechanic, and deserves to have some attention paid to it even if it were in alpha.
I'm not discounting the fact that they have jobs that aren't Starmade, I'm just saying that if they spend 14 days working on one thing, that doesn't mean they can't spend that same amount of time working on something else

I agree bugs should be removed. Polishing means removing bugs and making the game... polished. But there's a stereotype that alphas must not care about graphics. This is, I believe, quite good anyway, as features should have a heavier weight, but as wolfyboyft said, why wait? We have plenty of features, why not spend just 14 days to make the atmosphere and immersion 100x better?
My unfounded idea that 14 days is all it takes may or may not be true, but I know that simply adding new SFX and some new non-post processing GFX wouldn't take very long.
no good looking thruster animation ever in the game :'(?
    I feel. :`(

If that's the case, that's awesome news. I'm just weary of delays is all, I think Starmade should have an immersive atmosphere and it would add to the gameplay a lot.

Understood. What I am saying is that: 1. They know. 2. Immersion comes as a result of core systems and support systems and the game engine working harmoniously together in a fully realised world. We have pieces of that but we are so not there yet. No point in polishing the hub caps when the wheels aren't on the car yet.

"Make weapon effects look good" and "only one method of implementation" are for example two mutually exclusive concepts in my book. How should, for example, a missile look like? Are the flying fairy lights we have now ok? Predefined 3D Models? "Press R on this missile computer to design the missile that it shoots"? Hell, you said "thruster trails" and people start arguing about them, showing you that it apparantly is not such an easy concept. There are so many things to consider. That's why people think your post is not constructive: You list things you want to see implemented, but put no effort in as to how you want them to look like (apart from the music genres, which I would agree with you on). So it just looks like a list of demands, which is hardly constructive.

I could not have stated that better,

this game is still far from complete and adding polish to it will only cause more problems in the near future, I would rather wait for this to come later when everything is complete than get it now, only to have it be glitchy and buggy and have to be removed soon only to have it get put back in later.

I'm a programmer myself and here is one of the greatest evils of programming "adding polish and a few other things like it before you are getting ready to be done". If you try and polish something that isn't done you'll end up with the issue of when you add other things that also need polish or cause bugs in the polished things you already polished.
