Idea is to make a docking rail for things that don't move thus saving a rail speed controller and an actuator block to set speed zero for something that isn't going to move anyways.

just use a single rail and it aint gunna move
It does however continue to do checks for movement and collision, which is why people put a speed controller and actuator block (off) on a rail to stop those checks and cut the server load

I think the problem comes in when you try to dock multiple things right next to each other which you can only really do 4 compact on a single plane, as anymore will result in the rail trying to move the entity from the inner ones outward or you have to leave spaces. (unless you do as cyberus111 suggested)

Does it still do that? I thought this was fixed (or at least massively reduced), and that fix was responsible for the huge lag reduction with lots of rails.

they will have to touch the collision detection further for it should not be in the endusers department to utilize 3 blocks to prevent lag. the game is learning intense enough. i think it is time for the game to differ between rails which actually could cause collision and those which just hold something in place not moving at all just to skip tests in the later case.

It still does it, just not as bad as it used to, as evidenced by the "Entity is too large ... speed is x%" warnings
