I think it would be excellent to have variables for jump drive charging for display modules. I'm putting in a jump engine, and wanted to have a status display that wasn't entirely made up.

    I was thinking:
    • % charged
    • Seconds of charging required before jump
    • Power consumption
    Thoughts?

I think you're talking about something similar to the [power] feature on the display module. The basework is already there, and it would be a good feature, but then again you could just use the flight mode to find out how much charged and you can find out the other too. I think it'd be a great feature, just not one that should/needs to be addressed right now. I think there is so much more to go into the game right now that that is a low priority and should be brought up at a later date.

I agree you can get the information from the core, but that doesn't help crew members or RP very much. I also agree about the priority. It is very low priority, and if it would take any reasonable length of time to implement I'd probably rather them work on something more important. However, it could be 20 minutes of work, and easily worked in between a couple of bigger work items.

I think expanding the variables and programmatic hooks for display modules adds depth to the game. Display modules are much more interesting than decorative blocks precisely because you can do more with them than just look pretty. I think it's this kind of depth that makes Starmade a better sandbox experience than Minecraft. That said, I would definitely prefer something like fauna over display module improvements, if I had to chose.

I'm all for more display module functionality!
One difficulty I see though with jump drives and other controller blocks (wouldn't it be nice to have the same info for weapon computers etc.?), is that while your ship has a single overall power/shield capacity, there can be multiple system controllers on the same ship. Unless we get display module variable arrays, I don't see a consistent way to access and display that information; even with arrays, it might be a minor pain to figure out which jump drive computer corresponds to what array index...

There will probably be a whole lot of new features for the display module before the game is finished.
