Customizable Decoration Block

Hi,

Please forgive me if this has been suggested before.

Would it be possible to make a customizable decoration block that could pull a texture of a given name from your local/server folder structure somewhere?

I was thinking of a block that you place, then enter "R" and either configure with a standard texture file or perhaps 6 different texture files in the form of PNG or GIF or something for animation and transparency effects.

Example uses;

• Signage
• Custom decoration - pictures, trademarks, Faction symbols etc
• Combined custom blocks to pretty much build other custom structures perhaps

I'm sure others have proposed something similar and would have more ideas around this.

Under Example Uses, you forgot to add:

• Trolling - Plastering images of penises, boobs, giant memes, etc. on enemy bases or docking them to unfactioned newbie ships.

Potential for nonsense aside, though, this would be nice to have.

Lol! Now that would be funny and a little annoying.

Servers have the option to use custom blocks and send the custom block textures to clients that log in - this is a much 'safer' way to do this.

Eh... But it's not practical to make a new custom block every time a faction decides to crop up. :\

Nope. But again, it's much safer than allowing clients to upload images to use on the blocks.

I guess users can request a texture upload with the admin. This would work for me. Although, you would eventually run out of block IDs wouldn't you?

If you have a customizable block, you would have infinite possibilities with only 1 block ID.
I think the admin permission would be key to prevent abuse as described by Ithirahad.

I think that could be automated. If a server has a website that has accounts hooked up with the game a founder of a faction (with a certain amount of members?) could create one faction block for this faction. The block could appear ingame after a server restart.
If you know how you could make it so that a faction needs to pay with faction points.

Users uploading to a server could go through are approval system were an ingame admin has a list of images that require aproval and he can see a preview of the image quite like some forum system we all know about...

This would be an ingame GUI thing for admins so it won't be hard to do for the admins

A person can build them too... They can still build a penis out of dirt with pretty much no effort.

Nope. But again, it's much safer than allowing clients to upload images to use on the blocks.

Well look at Steam Sprays and Starmade Skins. Why not a skinnable block? I could put something innapropriate on my skin, or Steam Spray, if you want a way to regulate it, make the block expensive, so that people aren't going to want to spam them.
