I think it would be good if weapons had a new component: power storage. One would connect weapon power cells and chargers (magazines and loaders for missiles). Energy cells/magazines would store charge, and chargers would convert ship power to weapon energy (or possibly missile loaders could consume explosives). By storing power in the weapon, one could make burst firing weapons that are more powerful than the ship they are on could otherwise sustain, but that can only fire a few shots before they have to recharge. But if they had enough chargers, they could fire continuously, but it would put greater strain on their ships power, or you would have to have less powerful weapons.

    Any thoughts?

Is this not what power capacity is for?
In fact, isn't this just the power system?

It seems too easy to take the already massively powerful capital weapons and just make them more powerful, while providing almost no benefit to smaller fighter play. I think weapon exclusive power storage that holds more might be interesting, but would need a fair amount of balancing

Ever hear of 'power capacitors'? Those are those blocks that store power for later use, work best when all power capacitors on the ship or station are arranged so that they form one group.

As for weapons using consumable ammunition there are already several threads about that, there is even some that advocate giving players and ship designers a choice in whether the installed weapon system required ammunition, power or both. For smaller ships I can see a need for weapons that require ammunition instead of power that also limits the number of volleys delivered before the ship must retreat or return to reloading station, particularly for ships intended to conduct a 'strike' attack much like torpedo and dive bombers of WW2 against large seafaring warships. While the current 'warhead module' in theory seems to fill this role it is currently much to buggy and weak to be a truly viable alternative.

It is different from power capacitors because it allows one to burst fire weapons without draining everything when they do so.

Neat idea, but high alpha damage is already problematic.

Easily accomplished, just add more power capacitors, either to the main ship, the turret base or turret barrel.

Or are you suggesting that there be a limit to the power transfer rate from the ship to docked entities to force ship builders to place power capacitors into the turrets?

Given the number of (overly?) complex formulas used in this game I don't see why something simple like this to give small ships a little boost to their first shot would be such a chore. The more power and e/sec regen available the less benefit you get from the "weapon cell"/"booster", and if it used the same type of rules that shield regen does in that the cell won't begin to recharge until X secs after the last time the weapon was fired that should take care of possible abuse.

I still don't see how it is any different from intelligently managing your power framework and tweaking your weapons accordingly. It is basically making a new block, which works the same way as Capacitors, but a separate unit linked to weapons... and has associated drawbacks. Why in the world would anyone use that?

No, all weapons should draw from one main power bank like every other game ever made.

Besides I can already tell you if you did this my capital would just use weapon power storage because that is the only thing storage is currently used for- weapons.

Not too keen on the new blocks, but burst firing weapons would be useful. Instead of having a weapon continuously rapid firing until your energy runs out, you could set it to burst fire ton conserve energy.
