So, I've been looking around for info on how shields work on planets if that is even possible and haven't had much luck. I came across one post that mentioned that it does work, but only with the specific plate that you place it on, but it was really outdated. Can anyone explain how planetary shields work or maybe link me to somewhere that does?

    It will be much appreciated.

Hmm. I know that It does indeed work on planets however I don't think the shields will transfer between plates.

Since each shield only protects an entity or docked entities while over 50% it will only protect the plate the shield is on.

So someone could punch though the other planet section and blow up the planet resulting in your plate with shields floating in space.

In theory you could build a structure around the rest of the planet off that one plate and that would interdict all fire with your one shield.

Not sure how the homebase protection works on a planet though.

or you could dock a ship to your homebased plate then build plex doors around the planet like a sphere. you basically transfer the home base protection through one ship that covers the entire planet

Home base protection seems to extend to the entire planet anyway. Building a station marked as home base around an already shielded planet is theoretically possible, although when I tried it my client crashed. I don't have a beefy ass computer though. maybe someone who does, or plays on a server which does, can get a full sphere around a planet.

Station + Planet = massive lag

It is poor optimisation if anything.

Among my personal server with me and some friends we always have planet bases. Maybe it only becomes an issue when there are a ton of players

Only reason I suggest using a station is that a direct extension of a planet plate means extension of gravity of he planet. Using a docked ship has the risk of the ship becoming undocked, and while hovering over part of that ship won't put you into the gravity well (you have to be over a block of the planet) you have to clear the ships altitude + a few meters to escape the gravity well, so the ship also extends gravity.

I wonder why the game hates stations near planets. Its not like the shell has to touch at any point...
