It was noted some time after the Matterhorn was deployed to active duty that the ship engineers had failed to install shield recharge systems aboard the turrets, resulting in high casualties of turret operators during a raid on a pirate stronghold.
As a result, the Mk4 Turret was designed and equipped about the Matterhorn. The new turret is better designed than its predecessors, with stronger shields, enhanced cannons, faster beam emitters, and an advanced missile launcher.
The new systems were rushed into service as quickly as possible to prevent further loss of life.
