The Torpedo Frigate was the Rendii Empire's first line of defense against midsize capital ships. While not as effective against fighters, this heavily armored frigate is nonetheless exceptionally effective against midsize threats of all sorts, and is also capable of filling in as a fleet support vessel.
Stats:
Mass: 8,219
Dimensions: 135x58x18
Armament:
2x heavy missile tubes (22% beam support) 400,000 damage
1x mine replicator
6x dual point defense cannons (recessed popup turrets)
Crew: 55
Thrust/mass ratio: 0.3
Reactor: 60,720 e/s
Shields: 280,500
A major feature of this class of ship is the popup turret design. During normal operations, the vulnerable mechanisms of the dual autocanon turrets are recessed within the hull, being deployed only as needed in combat situations. While deployed, these turrets provide a reasonable degree of protection against incoming missiles, although capital class torpedoes may overwhelm their ability to engage.
Two further popup turrets conceal repair systems and a small mining array to aid in the fleet support role. While these are of questionable utility in the presence of fleet support elements, those classes tend to suffer high attrition on extended campaigns and so the Rendii government permitted later editions of most frigate size combatants to include at least rudimentary support capability.
The Combat Information Center is where the combat operations of the frigate are conducted. Carrying as she does a small crew, many operations are automated however a crew of six are required to move the ship, and fifteen for minimum combat ability.
The remainder of the vessel is equipped with quarters, common area, and other necessary amenities for a crew of 55.
Vessels such as these may seem impressive by today's standards in the Ephebian Backwater, but they were the merest scouts of the great Rendii armadas. A single torpedo frigate would almost never be deployed alone, but would instead be a part of a squadron of other frigates, almost certainly escorting a "proper" capital ship.
((OOC Notes
This model is a 1:1 scale copy of the Hiigaran Torpedo frigate, obtained through the Homeworld Remastered files and imported through SMEDIT. While the combat ability of the ship is somewhat close to that of the ship of which it is a copy, the further capabilities such as point defense turrets are included in a nod to being a functional capital ship in Starmade. As such, it should function well in a hybrid RP / combat gameplay mode, and may not be too big of a challenge to players if you wish to use it as a part of an upcoming Rendii AI fleet.
RP features include:
Deploy-able point defense turrets
Deploy-able support weapon turrets
Minelayer on a timer (or as a triggered weapon, but you must re-bind the computer to the ship core)
Docked Cargo bay doors
Rotating scanner dish
Extendable docking rings
Engine cutoff logic
moderately well programmed display screens in CIC
Transporters
reasonably well furnished interior
In combat testing, this ship performed reasonably well. The point defense guns were just about able to stop the missiles on the new Isanth Type M, (although even a large amount of Isanths weren't a match for even the shields on this frigate). Testing against some of my other "new production" ships yielded this result: One torpedo frigate was a match for several "Vigilant" class destroyers at long range, although started taking serious damage at point blank range. In a match against an Enlightenment class BC, the frigate was beaten outright.
(and before I get a lecture, I am using two different naming conventions: My old starmade one which was based on crew compliment, and the classes of homeworld ships. In Homeworld terms, the Vigilant would be a corvette, while the Enlightenment would be a very small destroyer. The numbers check out. )
