Ship Profile: Mountaineer Class patrol Corvette
Rarely seen still operational due to high maintenance requirements and limited survivablilty, these old workhorses may still be found in tier 3 or below system defense fleets.
Armament: 2x Light torpedoes
2x dual particle cannon turret
Novel in its day, the Mountaineer class patrol frigate sported several features that are said to be making a comeback, and others that were included largely to inflate the price and look good. She included the standard dual jump-drive setup for cautious scouting, and a sensor suite that was adequate for its intended role. Crew quarters were spartan but livable for a crew of ten, or cramped beyond belief for twenty.
The short lifespan fusion generators are spin-stabilized, and intended to be replaced every ten thousand hours. Since manufacture of replacements ceased seventy five years ago, these are likely long past mandatory replacement time. Still, when operating properly, they give the ship a much needed power increase, making it quite competitive in absolute output even by today's standards.
The manufacturers installed a set of variable-geometry control surfaces for atmospheric flight, despite the ship not being equipped for surface landings. The rumor was that they were included as a feature intending to sell buyers on the "premium package" which would be better equipped for atmospheric missions and planetary exploration rather than standard deep space operation. They serve almost no purpose, and when they inevitably break, are usually removed.
The dorsal and ventral turrets are what makes this ship notable. The turrets are quite well protected and packed quite a whallop when introduced. While the weapons themselves are now nothing special, the turret mounting including the "deep socket" installation method is once again gaining popularity due to its increased survivability.
(( This is my first ship in a number of months. If anyone has any helpful advice, hatemail, death-threats, etc, I still check the site every few days. The maneuvering fins do break, (rotators, what can I say?) but they were working properly at the time I posted this. All controls should be labeled. DO NOT attempt to use this ship in any sort of serious combat! the weapons are practically decorations, and it has no shields. upon request, I can put out a premium edition with landing legs, ramp, shields, and a couple of other tweaks I think of as I write this. Enjoy.))
