This is just a little pod/module that you can dock to your ship for damage control and medical support.
It has a small astrotech repair array, medical blocks, and a 1K storage bin for keeping materials to repair your ship underway if it takes some damage.
Pilot or co-pilot can enter it as a docked entity, undock and make some quick repairs, then redock and return to the bridge/cockpit. I keep a few item stacks in mine for repairing reactor lines, replacing lost shields or thrust, patching armor damage (standard armor for vital points and cheap foam-rock for filling in larger holes on non-vital systems), replacing damaged computers, etc.
So if your ship or part of your fleet has to fall back for a moment, you can simply reset your computer, swap over into one (or more, if more crew) of these, undock and do some repairs while the reset goes on. Then you re-dock, use the basic materials kept in DC storage to patch up your ship with big, fast blocks of systems, sheets of armor, replacement computers and power core bypasses. 2 minute turn around if you're fast
Can also serve as a last-ditch escape pod in emergencies, as it has a little thrust. I also feel like, docked externally, they make good red herring targets for opponents. The red cross makes it stand out, looking like some vital point. The reality is that if an enemy wastes a single shot aiming at this pod instead of an engine or cockpit, it's probably earned it's keep because it's so cheap to add and will keep a little damage off the main hull.
This is NOT any kind of stand-alone entity. It is only useful to enrich the function of other ships important enough to benefit from at least a small Damage Control & medical capacity, but not worth fitting with bulky, expensive medical centers and vulnerable repair turrets.
[[I wish there was a way to have entities load with a set cargo loadout that is included in spawning cost. This pod would function far better if it didn't have to be hand-loaded with armor, power, thrust etc every time.]]
