The devs want to simulate economy and interstellar faction relations.
So how does a booming economy manifest itself?
Through trade!
Currently ships spawn and restock shops yes? But they don't really do that anywhere else.
Warp gates have indicators of linkage on the map and so should trade routes. But you should only be able to see trade routes if you steal info from enemies or are trusted.
Trade routes can change, meaning you will have to continuously steal info to stay up to date.
When you arrive in a sector that has a trade route running through it a convoy will spawn.
The convoy could be anything from a single cargo hauler to a large frigate with a fighter escort and a jump inhibitor.
Depending on your relations with the faction that owns the convoy, you can expedite their journey with your jump drive, do nothing, or capture/be destroyed by them.
Stations with shops could buy subscriptions with the trading guild and have ships spawn to stock their shop,
But the trade is interruptible by other players. Larger more powerful convoys can be bought to protect from this.
Your own ships with AI crews can be sent to shops to sell and trade. After receiving orders, the ships and crew will despawn and a trade route is created. After one universe day the ships you sent respawns and rejoins your fleet the trade route no longer exists on your map.
The usefulness of trade depends on other features like some areas having more of one type of resource than another and that shop's prices in those areas reflect this.
