You need to have 1million credits and a hull block, and then you just press m to create the first block. this block doesnt need to stay there, you can delete it, but the station will be deleted if it was the only block in the station. Place other blocks first if you want to remove the block, but not lose the station and 1mil credits

If not, you can always dedicate some of its outside surface to \"shield arrays\" which would be flat turrets spanning over critical areas of the station while doing nothing else than generating massive and ridiculous shield. Or even make it a docked ship, since it doesn\'t actually have to move.
It\'d be some sort of really expensive armor/shield plating.
However I think shield work. In doubt, equip and power some on your station, and take shot with weak antimatter cannons. Worse happens: you lose one block of dirt you placed for testing
