Spawning on planet is buggy

In single player I am currently on a planet, so I leave the game while standing on it's surface. When I start up the game I spawn underground in solid rock, so I have to tunel my way to the surface every time I spawn. The only time I don't is if I stand on top of a small tower that I built, in which case I do spawn on the planet surface.

I don\'t know what causes this but it is quite annoying. I have found that it is always the same distance down so maybe coords are getting messed up on save.
