In my experience the only thing you really need to add armor to is the core. Almost every battle I have been in just ends with a single tiny hole straight to the core and no damge to the other ship systems (engines, power, sheilds, etc).

Since the system keeps track of how many blocks are in groups already, why not have those groups be disabled when they lose say 20% of their blocks. That way modular ship systems would be more useful and there would be a point to armoring stuff like engines.

+1 for the essence of your idea, but 1 block = 15 seconds downtime? Would reduce lag (grid re-calculation).

Energy? Armour would likely add 4 times the mass.

Thrusters? You get bonus from dimensions here too, althought is is not that much.

Shields? Maybe, but it needs a lot more to happen to make hulls good here.

Even if you protect multiple Energy/Thruster-strips with 1 hull surrounding all together, you have more than 2x weight.

It would take a lot out of the strategy if you need hulls for a medium sized ship\'s vital parts.
