So, I've seen people referring to their ships with different classes, such as "Mona Lisa Class". Is there any rhyme or reason to these names, or are they just ships created in a specific style? Is there a list of classes anywhere? How should I categorise my own ships that I create?]

As you may be able to tell, I find the ship class thing to be very ambiguous and not well explained or documented. Any help would be appreciated.

There are currently two primary methods of classifying ships: Nameless\' ship classification guide and Blitzwing\'s ship classification guide. These are based on mass and you can find them here:

    Blitzwing: http://star-made.org/content/blitzwings-guideline-ship-classifications

    Nameless: http://star-made.org/content/nameless-guide-ship-classifications

There is also a third ship classification methos, Calbiri\'s list based on the complexity, i.e. size of the blueprint file of the ship which can be found here: http://star-made.org/content/calbirian-complexity-scale

Of course, using these lists are purely optional and thus, you can call your 3 block ship a titan if you so wish, these lists merely come in handy in establishing common ground in regards to ship classes.

    Hope that helped.

In general, the are no \"real\" classes.

if youre gonna build more than 1 ship of a type, then you could make it a ship class, but if youre only building one of a kind you should not make it a class.

at least thats what im thinking.

Awesome, thanks. Those three should combine and make one unified class system, that would take out the chance of confusion between class systems.

nameless and furd could make one together, but calbiri\'s is the class system i will use, as a ship more complex should be of ahigher class, IE a very intricate fighter is considered greater than i simple corvette, also you can no longer just make a massive boring block with no systems and still be considered a titan

All but one of the replies missed the question in op entirely. Size classes are one thing that can be agreed on (hopefully) ship class is a function solely of its creators whims, and is used to identify a specific model of ship or line of similar ships. So a Mona Lisa class cruiser is a cruiser of the Mona Lisa design. Hope this helps.

I think in the end because of the speed of each contact (only a few mins), most people aren\'t going to work out what class a ship is (role or size or what ever other types people make up) But if you need to name a ship by class type then on earth its named for its role and class name is any name you want ie my next ship will be named after my dead dog.

Simple rule to live by, KISS - keep it simple stupid.

    I would class a ship in 3 ways -

    1, he\'s about the same size as me and let\'s tango;

2, I\'m smaller then him, so I\'m going to chew on his fat ass and raid his ship while he has a cry in chat because his fat ass made him die or

3, shit he\'s smaller then me and I should bug out.

That\'s quite a good approach. But what about turrets? Since a not so much larger than me ship can have way more and more powerfull turrets than you have.

    Ship Cores and Clasifications

I have noticed that everyone feels they have to compensate with a larger ship design to make up for something lacking in their life I guess. I find this rather annoying and think smaller ships or at least different ship cores are needed. I am former USNavy service member and I believe in many different ships sizes.

Here is my idea with out much change:

    1) By inspiration found at http://starmade.wikia.com/wiki/Ship_Classification , but at a more reduced numbers.

    a) Shuttles (Mass of 1-343 Blocks) Costs 1000 Credits

    Cargo/Escape pods

    b) Fighters (Mass of 250-2500 Blocks) Costs 2000 Credits

    Interceptors/Bombers/Strike

    c) Escorts (Mass of 2500-25,000 Blocks) Costs 4000 Credit

    Corvettes/Frigates/Repair ships

    d) Battleships (Mass of 25,000-250,000) Costs 8000 Credits

    Cruisers/Destroyers/Battleships

    e) Carrier (Mass of 250,000-500,000 Blocks) Costs 12000 Credits

    Carriers/Miners

    f) Titan (Mass of 500,000 Blocks or more) Costs 25000 Credits

    Titans/Planet Killers

Now with different cores you can use the same core textures and create restrictions to number of blocks and allow for a more diverse game play. This would also allow for more experienced players on a single server to spend money building larger fleets. Furthermore it give a slight RPG feel to the major PVP servers being that most have nothing left to buy or build.

One con in this is all the ship that have been made so far out there and another would be new players to a server having smaller ships. But thats something overtime anyone would solve.

Finally this would also challenge ship designers like myself to have a limit that we must overcome and create ships that would outpreform others not by mass but by design. Further limitaions may be create Military and Civilian Cores that are limited to blocks allowed. for example a military ship isnt allowed salvage cannons and a civilian ship can only have a weapon turret of a certain block size.
