Hey, I run a fairly new server, server.starjita.com (come visit!) and my players have an ongoing discussion about our server's 50 km/s speed limit and why it should or should not be changed, citing every reason from missile speeds to sector loading, etc. My server is a super powerful dedicated host (info can be found here: http://star-made.org/content/serverstarjitacom-dedicated-professional-host) so I'm not really worried about server-side loading issues or sector lag. I'm not really sure how fast missiles go, or if their movement is relative to the movement of the ship firing them, but some players argue that higher speed limits make missiles useless. Others say that a low speed limit discourages vast exploration. On other servers I've seen with high speed limits, I find turrets floating around off their ships, I can only assume this could be caused by the turret losing connection during fast movement through sectors? I'm on the fence about it, and I'd love to accommodate the players who want more speed, but I don't want to ruin missiles! Does anyone have advice for me on this, or conclusive information?

Missiles just need a speed boost, they start out at like 2 m / sec and don\'t take the current speed of the ship when fired (which is why they fire from inside/behind you). AMCs fire much faster (175 base?)

    Even a block of 200 missiles only fires at 39m/sec.. 1000 @ 50m/sec... worthlessly slow :(

If the server set max speed to remain at 50 as well. It won\'t catch someone running in a straight line, but it would catch someone in a dog fight as they have to alter their direction as they dodge to avoid getting shot (and such their \"effective\" speed is less then 50).

Still, one of the many things that need to be looked at when they eventually give a full overhaul of weapons would be missile speed, I agree on that.

Weapons at present are somewhat iffy at present in general though. Guns are 100% accurate, which actually makes it harder to use them to damage a large ship (if 10 shots that do 500 damage converge and hit a single block at the same time, they only destroy that one block), and their scaling has other issues which people argue about as well. Missiles of course have speed issues, along with issues with regard to the damage they do (block-wise and number-wise both), and the fact that they are uniform aside from the homing mechanic each uses.

I meant 50m/s being worthlessly slow because most servers have 75+, or at least 60+, and that was @ 1000 missiles. Also not sure what the turn speed of missiles is, so you might be able to avoid them by making sharp turns as well (or flying at them and moving out of the way)

(if 10 shots that do 500 damage converge and hit a single block at the same time, they only destroy that one block)

Actually, they will most likely drill a hole right through where you shot, when testing shotgun arrays even when they converge, most (all?) of the shots will hit their own blocks and cause massive internal damage.

    You\'re both converting from m/s to km/h wrong. 50 m/s isn\'t 50 km/hour; it\'s 180 km/h. A 50 m/s missile will catch up to an opponent easily on a 50 km/h server.

Missile speed shouldn\'t be based on the number of missiles launchers in an array. In fact, if anything, as missiles become larger through more power, they should get slower. I don\'t understand this game. Everywhere else, in almost every other game, bigger = slower, less accurate, massive damage, usually worse rate of fire (unless super bulky ginormous weapon) and smaller = faster, (usually) more accurate, less damage, better rate of fire. In this game, it\'s bigger = faster, more accurate, more damage, more AoE, better rate of fire, and smaller = slower, less accurate, less damage, less AoE. worse rate of fire.

Looks like the speed has changed from when I last tested, it used to be that it was matching up 1:10 with the speed of the ship vs the Speed rating in the weapon menu, so 2.2 in weapon would be ~ 22 in the top info bar.

Seems that now even 50 missiles will fire out in front of the ship instead of trailing it and will go faster... It now seems that 2.5 in the weapon speed menu matches 50 in the info menu, so 30 missiles to match default speed of ships

Looks like more playing with missiles again :)
