Recurring "Requesting Synchronize" Issue

I did a little Google work, and saw some people had posted this same question on the old site, but I was unable to find any answers.
When I try to connect to a friend's server, the game gets as far as the "requesting synchronize..." phase before stopping. I've been able to connect once, and it is already past the logging in phase. My friend says that on his end, it shows I am in the game.
Does anyone have any suggestions on why this continues to occur, and how we can resolve it? Thank you!

I have the same problem however it doesn't show that I am logged into the game.
