I think that\'s sun damage, being too close to the sun damages your ship despite how much sheilding it has. As for your guns my best guess is that you don\'t have a reactor efficient enough at generating power to keep your guns firing. On a small ship all you need is to generate more power then the guns use, for larger ships you want power tanks so there is enough power load for the guns to draw from in the first placee.
